Author Topic: Lose connection between xbox & Media Center with new Firmware 2.05NA  (Read 10385 times)

Hi,

I have a DIR-825 router series b, with firmware 2.05NA.
My desktop is running vista 64Bit
I want to use my xbox 360 as a media center. Here is the problem

I lose my connection between my xbox and my computer whenever the xbox is turned off.  I can connect, and it works well, but only after I uninstall the extender from Media Center, then restart my computer. Then it sees the xbox on the network.  I then have to set up a new connection. This is done over wireless N using the 5ghz band.

The connection holds until my xbox is turned off. Then when I turn it back on it does not see the connection to the Media Center.

Why is this question on the D-link forum: because I never had this problem until I updated the new firmware (my previous firmware was 2.02NA). I updated to 2.06, but then went back to see if that would make a difference and it didn't.  The xbox can connect to xbox live and the internet (netflix etc...) but it does not see the home network to allow me to stream media between the computer and the xbox.

I have disabled the firewall on my PC, I have disabled SPI, and do not have any other firewalls running on the network. This is incredibly frustrating and I would appreciate your help. I'm a novice when it comes to networking so simple language explanations would be appreciated.

Cheers

Wade

PS keeping the xbox turned on all the time is not an option :)

Is Enable Multicast Stream Enabled under Advanced/Adv Networking?

Some other things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Review the DGL-4500 forum for XBL information.

Thanks for the options - unfortunately I've really screwed the pooch as I had the bright (maybe not) idea of going to the old firmware.

Now when I go to the 192.168 interface, none of the text shows up on the screen just a bunch of boxes. I've tried it in firefox chrome and internet explorer.

HELP!

One more update. Media center works fine on the older firmware, even though my web interface is now screwed up.

Ideally I'd like to be on the newest firmware, and have media center working. If you can suggest a way to get the interface to work, so I can re-install the latest firmware, I'll then go through your troubleshooting suggestions

thanks,

Wade

Did you update the FW using Wired or wireless? ALWAYS USE WIRED!

I would do the following with the old FW if you want to:
1. Factory reset the router using the button in back or use Tools/System.
2. Update the FW using the .bin again.
3. Factory reset the router once more.

Check the UI for issues.

I appreciate the help. The factory reset got the interface working correctly. I have not had the time yet to upgrade the firmware and ensure everything works on the new firmware, but will let you know what succeeds.

thanks,

Don't update the FW until you think you can get it working with what is currently loaded.
What version is currently loaded right now?

The FW currently loaded is 2.02NA (from 2009). Media Center works on my Xbox 360, my two laptops (one XP the other Win 7) and my HP Touchpad are all connected and work well. My Windows phone and my wife's Android don't connect, which is what I was trying to fix by upgrading the FW.

The phones are lower priorities as we have unlimited data on both and don't use them too much at home.

If I use the same config.bin file with the new firmware, why do things change between upgrades?

Cheers.

It's best to not use the saved config file if you have changed FW as some things change between the version of FW. So if you load a newer FW version, its best to manually start config from scratch as the saved config file was created on the previous FW version.

So, it's taken me awhile, but progress has been made.

Enabling Multicast Stream for iPv4 seems to avoid the xbox losing the connect. But (there's always a but) the media center TV recordings don't go through correctly, it breaks up, wiht a bunch of squares and green pieces on the screen. I've tuned the network and the bandwidth is on high, so that's not it, but it's pretty frustrating.

I'm not sure how do the above steps. Do I have to type in a IP address on both the computer and the xbox?

Your help is appreciated.

The Dir-825 seems to have a problem with giving a connect to either of my Androids(me thinks that is an OS problem for the phone). My fix was to use assigned IP addresses to the phones. Just make sure you reserve the address in the Dir-825 that the phone will be using, duplicate addresses on the same network can cause all sorts of problems.

Not the cleanest fix, and there are some apps out there that can make switching IP's in the phone easier(so the phone can have more then 1 network with an assigned IP).

I could never connect with my Inspire 4G or my wife's Galaxy, but since I assigned IP's in the phone and router, never a problem. I have a high power AP and live out of town aways, my droid connects at about 800 yards with a very usable signal, every time!

I tried firmware 2.02-2.06, with the same outcome.......

My 2 cents, Furry is your best man for the other problems, I am still fighting with networking on Win 7, not seeing XP boxes and such. I had it working and then I built a new machine and forgot what I did to the last one, no need for a reply on that problem, I will beat it into submission!

type in and reserve the IP addresses on the router, not the devices. Set the devices to auto obtain.
