router blocking sites
« on: November 08, 2011, 10:03:15 AM »

hey guys I just signed up for the site and i've been reading through a lot of threads and already saw a few things happening to me, (my 4500 also has to be unplugged everyday due to connection lose. but that's for another day)

The past few days my router has started blocking all the websites im hosting on one of my servers. I put an allow on for all the sites in the web filtering but it didn't help. I can get to all the sites if i unplug my router and plug directly to the modem. Not sure what's going on. Also, for as long as i've had this router i've always been getting hundreds of blocked incoming udp and tcp packets showing up in my log. Not sue about that either.

I'm on fw 1.23 just upgraded from 1.21 today didn't help
hw: a2

Be aware we've seen some problems with Arris modems and using external routers. Do you have phone service thru this modem by chance? If so, then you might have a router.

If your hosting web sites on a server on the LAN side, I presume that you might need to set up either Virtual Server or Application Rules to allow the router to let traffic in from the WAN side to the LAN side and make it to the hosting server.

FYI, Updating FW should be done only has a last resort after troubleshooting and checking HW configurations has been performed. Most of the router problems see are configuration issues and not FW issues.

Hi FN, thanks for the reply, i actually just changed to this modem today. I've been having this problem for a few days now before putting the new modem in and I'm not sure what to check to get this working again. It's been working fine for years and two days ago it started blocking all the sites im hosting. The server is external in another state actually to my network here. I can visit any other site just not the ones i'm hosting weird stuff.

i just double checked and it is just a modem

Ok, so your trying to get to one of your web sites thats not on the LAN side of the router and located else where in a different state on the WAN side right?

What happens if you directly connect the PC to the ISP modem? Can you access those web sites?
What browser are you using? Does Opera or FF do the same thing?

yeah my server is in another state. I've tried on all my pc's, mac's, ipads and even iphones(when connected to my network) can't access the site from anything safari, ie, ff, or chrome. i just keep getting "unable to connect" ff can't establish a connection to the server at ...

If i unplug the the router and plug a computer directly to the modem the sites all open fine. It's strange because 3 days ago everything was fine and then the next day all out even though nothing was touched.

Some things to do:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 or 5e recommended.

thanks i've checked these and everything seems to be as it should be. I'm able to get to every other site just these particular sites aren't working. Is there some where else other than the web filtering that i can add in an exception to see if that opens it up.

What happens when you open a cmd box and ping the remote IP address of this server?
I'm wondering if the remote site is not letting you in by change. Theres really nothing on the router to prevent you from going to a particular site unless you have set up access or web filters to not allow that. You should be using web filters unless you trying to prohibit users from going to particular sites. If this is off then the router should be working well. Hmm.

Might have some one here review your router settings using teamviewer.

You sure the remote site isn't blocking by chance? I guess it wouldn't be if you by pass the router and connect to the ISP modem.  :-\

you're not going to believe this but after 3 days of not working and me completely confused as to why it was blocking specific sites. All the sites just started connecting again. I didn't do anything they just started working. I don't know. ???

Thanks for the help though. very much appreciated.
