Was excited be4 buying dir-825, but later dissapointed
« on: November 11, 2011, 12:24:49 PM »

THe main reason Why did i bought DIR-825, was excelence of their former device D-link DI-524 (2,4ghz).
I used it to connect with a remote PC(with certain program), where is installed video surveillance(which was 300m farther(actually with my merchant shop)), but it was not very stable (signal strenght was 30-40%).
And of course i used di-524 to connect my laptop on it. TO mention, i attached outdoor omni antena 2,4ghz that gain 12db.
- After i while i saw Dual Band DIr-825 and got better idea,-> to connect remoted PC(video surveil..) with 5ghz equipment, so i bought dir825, and wlan adapter 5ghz and installed it on Remoted PC.
 - I attached on dir-825, omni antena 2,4ghz 12db, and directional Panel antenna 5ghz 18db(outdoor).
 - So excited i went to a my merchant shop to try it, and it was not good, signal was only 10-15% at 5ghz,
afterwards i tryed to return 2,4 equipment, but signal was only 15%(on remoted pc was directional antennas both and 2,4 and 5ghz).

- Now i am asking before selling this thing, is there any way to boost this signal, or simply to sold Dir-825, and call it "failed investment". OR is there any dual band router with better signal range, or only way is to make mikrotik with two wlan cards...?
Many THanks.

Greetings!

300M is about the upper end of the range for the Dir-825. The panel antennas are a big help, still with 15 milliwatts output, it is not very efficient, a single band router will be better because there is no loss in the antenna diplexer(that is the built in part that allows a single antenna to do 2.4 & 5Ghz).

Do you need 5Ghz? It will have a slightly shorter range then 2.4Ghz.

What country are you in, before I recommend something illegal like a good amplifier, I want make sure it is legal. Also how long is the cable to the panel antennas? What kind of cable(RG-316 maybe).

That is not a perfect cable to use, but it is low priced and the next best cable is about 11mm in diameter, so I would stick with what you have.

I can't find many laws regarding WiFi in your country, I will assume it is close to the rest of Europe.

Do you need to use 5Ghz or can you use 2.4Ghz only?

The Dir-825 does not have a strong signal like a 2.4Ghz ONLY router would have. It is a quality router though.

If you can get by with 2.4Ghz only, I will recommend an amplifier. The distance you are trying to go is to far for a 15Mw signal, I would much rather see you running a 500Mw amplifier.

5Ghz is a sensitive band, fog and humidity will limit its distance. 5Ghz is not easy to amplify and is very expensive to make the signal stronger.

Please let me know if you can use 2.4Ghz only. I like your current antennas, they are very efficient. If you could use 2.4Ghz only, your range will increase. With my amplifier I am getting 500m at 75% signal strength to my android phone, my signal is good to 1Km then it falls too week to use.

Here is a good 2.4Ghz amplifier. I would not buy it direct, please check and see if you can find one in Europe. It is too expensive to ship from the states to the EU. Maybe even E-Bay.

Most dual band routers will have a weaker signal then a single band router. But if you want a new high power 2.4Ghz router, this may even be cheaper, but please check the price of dual port amplifiers in your country. No duties or taxes from 2 countries.

Thanks alot for help, and it will help alot members here. 2.4 ghz would be OK Here, But, there is no any of this or similar items on any  european ebay (only one in china, but not sending to BiH). Even if i buy on american ebay it will stuck at custom inspection... But if i find it in uk ebay it would passed through customs, but there is no any similar thing, besides those: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1W-30DBm-WiFi-802-11b-g-Gain-Signal-Booster-Amplifier-/110721383681?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19c7823d01
In my country thary is no any amplifier  :-\
If there is no some other solution i do not want to overwork you anymore mate, thanks for help alot.

No, I do not buy from China because of Customs either.

Below is a link to a great access point that a couple of users here are trying out. This is the same one as I am using. I use it as an access point ONLY, the part number is PL-APN. I am getting easily 1KM line-of-sight out of this access point. The D-Link Dir-825 has a GREAT router built in, so I use the Dir-825 as my router/firewall and I turn off the WiFi in the Dir-825 and use the PL-APN for WiFi only. I have been using this setup with only minor problems that are easy to work around, for close to 9 months now. Also, I can't read your language, please translate the terms "high power router", "High power WiFi" and "High power access point" and search the EU E-Bay and Google and see what you can find. The EU has to have something close. If you find something close in the EU, please post and I will check it out for you.

Others can help more with this, if you can't find a high power Access Point or amplifier, maybe consider the Dir-655, this is a good single band router and has better range then the Dir-825, but I think it still will NOT be powerful enough. 300M is a long way, but your antennas will help with some of that. WiFi in the US is rarely good for more then 25M-50M, and that is on a good day.

Is customs a problem from the US to your country? I have shipped and received a lot from the EU, but not Bosnia&Herzegovina. I just checked the US to Bosnia, I don't see a problem except maybe VAT and customs might be expensive?

Good luck with your search mate!

Here Mate,

53E from Germany (I can read some German, Spanish and French). The same one I use in the states, 13 channels and almost 1000Mw output and the antennas come off to hook to yours! They have them in the UK too.

The receive and the transmit are boosted on these. I get 1Km through the supplied antennas, your antennas will be much farther!

If you buy one:

1. Disable "short GI" in the menu, not everything is compatible with this.

2. Pick a mode, B, G or N. I use "N" only here at home, but some people need G mode. It makes it faster if you pick one mode only. Some devices do need "B and G" to work properly.

3. Don't sleep next to it! It is ok to be close to it, but I would not want it sitting next to me 24x7, I would place it so it is at least 1/2M from pets and people if you use the built in antennas. If you use external antennas, no worries, all of the radio waves are outside the house. This is a very large power difference from the "regular" router, and the frequency is the same as a microwave oven, just as a safety precaution. I am a radio engineer in the US, always, safety first.

You won't believe the range of this thing with the included antennas until you use it, this is no trick, pure power!

Enjoy!

And one question my bro, You are gifted alot for this, and i also do not want to harm anything with this, (of course it will be 3..4meters above me) but if it is dangerous even for a birds with those antennas i would not like to use this, but i hope it is not? Greetings from BiH!

No, the birds will be fine. I am 1M from mine right now, just don't put it in your pillow.

It would take hundreds of hours at less then 10 Cm for me to worry and even that is minimal.

No worries!

All of those are low power, you will be in the same situation you are in now.

http://viewitem.eim.ebay.eu/28dBm-RTL8196-Long-Range-WLAN-Router-Access-Point-WIFI-High-Power-REALTEK/310344399092/item

Above are 2 high power routers, I have no experience with them. We have a lot of them in the states, it seems not so many in Europe.

You need to look for "high power wifi" or a "wifi amplifier". You want 400mw to 2000mw output power.

Sorry for the delay in the response, we are on holiday here in the states.
