Router needs constant reboots. Update to latest firmware?
« on: November 13, 2011, 08:22:40 AM »

I'm running a D-Link DIR-655 Hardware Version A3, Firmware Version 1.21. In the past, it has been flaky, and I considered updating to the latest firmware (1.3+ something), but everywhere I read (mainly this forum) said it might be WORSE for the router and couldn't even be downgraded, so I decided to ride it out.

Eventually the problem disappeared and I forgot about it, but now it's back with a vengeance. Recently I opened up a Guest Zone so my neighbors could borrow wifi, and I occasionally run torrents. Torrenting seems to definitely crash the router overnight, while it also seems to randomly bug out, possibly when the neighbors are using the Guest Zone. The Guest Zone might be responsible, but I have no idea.

For what it's worth, I don't think my neighbors are terribly tech-savvy, so I doubt they're filesharing or doing anything risky. They might have malware installed, but I don't know.

Is there a way I can diagnosis my precise issue, should I go ahead and update to the latest firmware to try and fix my issues, or what?

Yea, from the router's conifguration page (192.168.0.1) go to Status > Wireless to find out what wireless devices are connecting, and their IP. Then go to Status > Internet sessions, and look for those IP under Local. Then for that IP, check out IP and port under "Internet". For example:

192.168.0.196:54582   68.1.x.x:54582   12.130.207.50:80   TCP   LA   Out   128   50

That shows a outgoing request from my computer (192.168.0.196, on random port 54582) through 68.1.x.x (My router's public IP given by ISP) to 12.130.207.50 (Dlink support site) for port 80 (HTTP). Now you can't see the bandwidth use really, but you can kind of tell. Lower priority will usually be streaming media of some kind. A "EST: Established" under state tells you it's actively passing data. Theres a bunch of other stuff, but I have probably overwhelmed you enough.

Also anything new around the time the problem went away? Or anything new around the time the problem came back?

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? WEP, WPA or WPA2? Preferred is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area?
Turn off Short GI and WMM Enable under Advanced/Adv. Wireless.

Thanks, Hard Harry. Most of the connections are HTTP (port 80), and most are from my computer, though there are quite a few from a pair of Androids (not mine, since I assigned my phone its own reserved IP). Most of their connections are on port 80, though I saw one on port 5228 (android app store?). This is kind of fun snooping, but I don't see any obvious torrenting or anything.

I think the problem went away because we only had one computer and a few game consoles using it. Now we have at least three computers, a number of game consoles, three smartphones, and other misc devices. Also, I feel that the problem is related to the Guest Zone for some reason. Maybe I should just disable it and give the neighbors my network password?

FurryNutz: I am using mixed G/N, WPA2 (only AES) on the primary network, no encryption on the Guest Zone. No cordless phones or other wifi routers nearby, but I notice the Guest Zone shares Channel 6 with the primary network.

I am going to try WPA2 AES & TKIP (instead of just AES), and I'll disable Short GI and WMM Enable. I'll tell you if I can keep it running 24 hours without a reboot!
