USB port and external Hard Drive

I apologize ahead of time if I did not spend enough time on the threads and my questions are already answered.  I realize the USB drive is advertised as for printers, but also noticed a feature to upload usb stick files.  My questions abou this option:

1.  What formats can the USB drive be in?
2.  Can I see the USB hard drive on my network?
3.  Can I setup the USB as tunneling to the NAS so it becomes viewable as an UPnP service?
3.  Assuming I can see it can it be used for backup purposes?
4.  I realize there may not be a utility within the DNS-320 to backup to the USB, but has anyone got it setup so a computer handles the backups?

Sorry for all the questions, its just a have several reasons why I want to add a 1TB hard drive to the NAS.  If I can do the above I am set.

As far as I know :


1. ext 3 and 4, FAT 32 , NTFS

2. Yes

3. No

3. Yes (manually)

4. No , but a much requested feature

For #3 you can set your backup application to go to the path of the USB drive via IP address or hostname (\\ipaddress\USBDisk1_1), which works perfectly for me (Synctoy)
You can also perform a backup from the USB device to the NAS using the built in local backup feature (but you can't do it the other way around afaik)

Again, it might not be possible to do it using the NAS' software, but #4 is a yes rather than a no if you're using a third party backup tool. Synctoy works perfectly with the following settings;

Thank you for the replies.  Am excited to learn I can create backups through USB.  Now I can have a main drive, some redundancy in the Volume_2 (I have a smaller drive there and only the critical pics are there) and can put the other stuff on a secondary USB.  With the current cost of hard drives I could not go out and buy another large 2tb.
