which router should i get
« on: November 29, 2011, 06:29:33 PM »

In my home one kid likes to play xbox online while the streams netflix on the ps3, when this happens xbox either lags or disconnected. I'm looking at the 4300 and the 4500 which one would be best for my situation? Or should I go in another direction all together? Thanks

Well between those two, go with the 4500 hands down. And thats not because this is a DGL-4500 forum. Any 4300 you pick up will be used, since Dlink discontinued them some time ago. Which means no Dlink support or firmware updates.  Also, 4500 has N, which is a huge step up. 4300 does have some features the 4500 doesn't, like wireless only mac filtering, but thats no where near the trade off. Don't get me wrong, the 4300 is a AWSOME router, but it just can't compete with the hardware advancements the 4500 takes advantage of.

With that said, It's important you look at the big picture. If the reason your Xbox is lagging while using netflix on PS3 is because your pushing your bandwidth limit, then no router will help. A HD netflix movie and a few PC's doing casual web browser can eat up a 5down/2up connection quick. What speed do you pay for from your ISP?

I have turbo charged road runner guess I'm not sure how fast exactly. Did a speed test with my pc and it said about 26 download speed and 1 upload while the one was playing xbox

Hmm, 1 upload is a bit on the slow side. But Netflix won't take up too much upload. A little bit, since TCP has overhead for packet confirmation, but that is probably less then 50-100kbs. I would go direct to modem and see what your upload is then. And check your bill, it should have you speeds there. Usually if your getting 26 down you should be getting around 3-5Mb up.

Other then that we can show you how to configure the 4500, PS3's, Xboxs, and Netflix to suit you best. We make (or atleast I don't) no promises, but we have a pretty good track record so far.

Ask ELOTT about the 4500.  ;D

DGL-4500 is a good buy. Usually about 95-100$ unless you can find it on sale. If your looking for something a bit on the less exspensive side, you might also consider the DIR-655.

DIR-655 (58$ On Amazon)

Me and Furry and a couple others monitor that forum too so we could help you either way. I think the only think you lose is the 5Ghz network, LCD screen, perhaps a bit cheaper antenna, and the branding of "game fuel". It still has intelligent QoS which is basically the same thing. If you do go with the DIR-655 try to get hardware version A2 and above. That way you can share the USB on the back and it fixed some wireless antenna issues.
