DIR-825 and DWA-160 issues with PS3
« on: December 02, 2011, 02:09:47 AM »

First post people so please go easy.
Have hooked up a DIR-825 to an iMac and it works well on 2.4GHz band. Having issues seeing 5GHz band as it comes and goes.
Just today bought a DWA-160 USB adaptor hoping it would connect the kid's PS3 to the 5GHz band but the PS3 wont accept or recognise either the DWA-160 or the 5GHz band.
Can't find any solutions in the manuals. Hoping to find a solution with you guys.
Desperate for a fix as the wife and I want to be able to work on the 2.4GHz without being constantly kicked off by the kids on the PS3.
Thanks in advance.

You need to first find a wireless adapter that the PS supports. I would ask Sony about that.

How about you swapping out you and your wifes wireless cards for 5Ghz cards and you and the wife work on 5Ghz and have the PS work 2.4Ghz? Any chance you can wire up the PS? Some options here.

However regardless if what wireless modes your working, you will need to setup some QoS rules for you, wife and PS so that you wont get kicked off either way. Having a gaming console online while wireless or wired devices are going regardless will impact anyone online unless QoS rules are set up.

Let us know as we can help you with that. I'll ask some resources here about what might be supported on PS for wireless adapters? Might not be 5Ghz though.

This is another option you can take a look at if you want to keep the PS on 5Ghz and PCs on 2.4Ghz:
TEW-684UB

These can be kind of a pain to get configured as once they are bridged, you can't access the device anymore unless you do a factory reset on it. There are configuration file saving options I believe so that would help too.

Let us know what you think.

Thanks for moving me to the correct board Furrynutz and thanks for the feed back.
Unfortunately I'm tech savvy only up to a very limited point so your guidance thus far has me in a cold sweat. I'm hopefully looking for a plug and play solution. Some of the PS3 forums say that a DAP-1522 bridge will work but then agin I see some users tearing their hair out.
Happy to go down one of the roads you've suggested if all else fails.
Your suggestion of hard wiring the PS3 could be an option. Looking at about 15m distance. Would this be an issue? also how do I achieve this? Just plug the cable into the back of the PS3 and the router and all will be good? Happy to take settings guidance on the router control panel if needed.
Again, thanks in advance.

Hey man, no worries as we are here to help as much a possible to get you going.

Yes wired is preferred for gaming. Distance isn't an issue as LAN cable and go up to about 92m on one length before you need assistance. I Recommend using CAT6 able. And yes, it's preferred to wire directly in to the back of the router with the PS. IF this can be achieved then this leaves the wireless open for you and the wife to use what ever kinds of wireless devices you need.

Once this is done, the we can help you set up the routers QoS options so that PS gaming won't interfere with your other devices and make sure you get Internet while there gaming.

Bridging seems to be a bit complicated however is doable and there is people who can help with this if needed.

Let us know.
