Hello all,
I upgraded to the newest DIR 1.21 drivers and had nothing but headaches so I downgraded back to 1.11.
Hardware Version: A2 is what I have.
ANyways I have a static IP set on my PC's TCP/IP configuration page on my pc and I disabled DHCP Server on the router configuration.
I have a pppoe connection to the internet.
The wierd thing is on the Ststus page, I cannot see my pc connected under the LAN COMPUTERS section
Anyways I can connect to every site, BUT MSN.com and I cannot even connect using msn chat program.
I also cannot connect my PS3 to the PSN Network.
But when I connect my PC directly to the internet using ppoe on my windows XP I CAN use msn chat and I can connect to msn.com.
I cannot ping msn, com, I get a request timed out error in the dos window, but I can ping everything else!.
Can someone please help, this is kind of ridiculous
1. Help with connecting to msn.com and getting msn chat to work on pc.
2. Help connect my PS3 to the internet.
I have used a static IP addrress on the PS3 also, but it does not every connect anymore.
My PS3 settings are:
I manually enter:
IP address: 192.168.0.110.
subnet mask:255.255.255.0
Defauilt Router: 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS: 202.224.32.1
Secondary DNS: 202.224.32.3
MTU: 1492
Proxy: do not use
Umpn: Available
NAT Type: Failed

I have set DHCP both on and off on the router, and when I leave it on, I put the ps3 ip address as reserved.  If I do this do I need to port forward?
I have uPnP enabled on my router, if thats the case, then I do not need to setup port forwarding, correct?

regards

Hello there and welcome to the D-link forums.

I will try my best to help you solve the issues you are having, but it's a two way process. I would like to first mention that if I dont mention any settings in here, then leave them at their defaults in the router.

It's quite possible that there could be some settings you may have made to the router to block particular applications or ports. What I would like you to do first is log into the router and go to Tools>System and click on save configuration. Save this to a location on your computer that you will remember.

The next step I want you to do is have a PC pluged into the router. When this is done, grab something small in diameter and hard reset the router by presing in the little button at the back. Hold it in for about 10 seconds. On the router, you will see the front LED's go off and come back on. Then you can release.

Make sure your computer is set to DHCP unless you know for sure your computers static ip configuration is correct and outside the scope of the DHCP addressing lease.

Log into the router to 192.168.0.1

Go to Setup> Internet> Manual Internet Connection Setup, choose PPOE, Address Mode: DHCP,  and set your login information. I would also suggest you use OpenDNS because it has several benefits that your ISP may not have. (see www.opendns.com), (see attachment for the IP address).

SAVE

verify you have internet connectivity. if not. Verify you can get to the router. If NO then it's some settings on your computer or a firewall. If YES then verify the router has internet connectivity by going to Status> Device Info. Another good thing to do is check is by going to Tools> System Check and where it says host name or IP address, type in a web address and click on PING. Note that Hotmail and versions of it ie: mail.live.com have been set to drop ICMP queries. This means when you ping it, it will not respond. So ping www.google.com

Assuming everything is working,

Go to Setup> Network Settings, turn off DHCP.

SAVE

set your computer to the following:

IP address: 192.168.0.10
subnet:      255.255.255.0
Gatway:     192.168.0.1
DNS:          192.168.0.1
DNS2:         <leave blank>

click ok on any boxes to save all changes.

open the command console.

start>run> cmd  (in windows xp)

Windows Vista you will need to type cmd in the search bar on the start menu (but dont hit enter. When you see the search results in the start menu, right click on the CMD icon and click on "run as administrator" or "with higher/elevated priveledges" whichever appears for you.

Now type ipconfig /flushdns there is no need to run ipconfig /registerdns but you may do so.
Type ping www.google.ca if you get responses then everything is ok.
type exit.
Now, you should be able to launch Windows Live Messenger and it should log in with no problems.
You should be able to get into hotmail.

If all works fine on your computer, GREAT!

Turn on your PS3. and go through the network setup again, choose the manual or advanced setting. Choose wired assuming your ps3 is wired if Wireless is needed, then you will have to setup yoru wireless.

Set as follows:

IP Address: 192.168.0.11
Subnet:      255.255.255.0
GATEWAY:  192.168.0.1
DNS:          192.168.0.1
DNS 2:        leave blank
Everything else for the PS3 network settings at its defaul (upnp on, proxy: disabled)

Test settings. Everything should pass. If you get NAT failed then:

Log into the router once more.

go to Advanced> Firewall Settings set more relaxed settings for the NAT. I usually have UDP Endpoint Filtering:  Address Restricted and TCP Endpoint Filtering: Port And Address Restricted. Use the help on the right hand side of the router to get it's explaination. You can open NAT right up to start with and see if PS3 fails on NAT. (it really shouldn't)

If you followed all the instructions without sidestepping (like I did with my little messy tut.) You should have unrestricted access with both your PC and your PS3. No port forwarding is necessary with UPNP enabled.

Sorry for no picture attachements. the dlink server is not accepting them as an upload. (unwriteable).

Hello Lotacus,
thanks for your information.
I did register with opendns and put in as primary and secondary on my routers DNS settings:
208.67.222.222 as primary and
208.67.220.220 as secondary.

I followed all of your steps above but it did not work.
I still cannot log onto the msn.com page and I cannot access msn messenger and my ps3 is not connected. ( the ps3 is a wired connection )
Let me give you more information.
I am located in Tokyo Japan, is that an issue?
I can successfully connect to msn.co.jp, but NOT to msn.com.
on the msn.co.jp page, when I click on the hotmail link, it fails.
I did a tracert msn.cp.jp and it worked:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>tracert msn.co.jp

Tracing route to msn.co.jp [207.46.78.170]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

  1     4 ms     4 ms     4 ms  tkynime.asahi-net.or.jp [124.155.68.9]
  2     4 ms     4 ms     4 ms  tkynird-ge0.asahi-net.or.jp [124.155.68.30]

  7     8 ms     8 ms    10 ms  207.46.78.170

But when I did a tracert on msn.com, I got this:

Re: Help me get my DIR-655 connected to hotmail.com, msn messenger and PS3

To add to this.
I rebooted everything, router, cabvle modem, pc and ps3.
Then I went to the PS3 and did a connection test, and it failed on the connecting to the playstation network again.
I then checked the connection status and it has uPNP as enabled and NAT TYPE 2 setup. ( or sometimes its just blank with a - )
So I went back and retrieved these from the log files of the router setup:

I then went into DOS and did a traceret again based on outgoing blocked ip from the above and these are those results:

Re: Help me get my DIR-655 connected to hotmail.com, msn messenger and PS3
« Reply #4 on: February 22, 2009, 08:18:23 AM »

Hello DLink support,
I connected my PC directly to the internet using PPPoe connection and everything works.
I connected my PS3 directly to the internet using a pppoe connection and it worked fine.
YET when I connect it through the router using the before mentioned steps, nothing is working.

This is basic functionality to have the router working to connect to sites.
I cannot use this for anything now, what did this new firmware do?
EVerything was fine when I had the old version of the firmware, then I upgraded to the new one ( official 1.20 ) and everything blew up.
I went back to the old 1.11 and 1.20 but nothing works with those either.

Please help, this is very frustrating.

Regards

Get the new 1.21 beta, this will probably solve your issue.

By the way, comparing a non-router setup with a router setup is not really fair, since the router 's job is to connect a LAN together and this has a definite impact on how the mechanism work. A router-less setup does not have any task other then connecting the one device...

I don't keep tabs of firmware dates, if you don't mind.
Please use the actual beta naming. In this case there is also a production version 1.21 so that might be helpful.

With PS3 you also might want to look at your PS3 config, there are some threads that give directions. Solution is not 100% though.

This is making my head feel like blowing up.

There is no reason why it would block those sites and it's only those sites. The only thing that I can see is the router is dropping reply's from 157.238.219.234.

I did several traces to destinations provided by your post for servers in japan and even to your ip address (assuming it is still valid) and there were no problems on my end.

Try these other things:

Put your computer in the DMZ.
Report results

Remove it from DMZ.

Go to adanced firewall, disable SPI and test.

Report results.

Take the ethernet out of the WAN port and put it in one of the LAN ports.  make sure PPOE passthrough Is enabled This will make the wireless gateway perform like a switch.
Connect the Computer using PPOE like you would as if you were connected directly to the modem.

Report results

And turn off DHCP...multiple DHCP on the same subnet will give issues

Ok this is really wierd, what is so special about hotmail and msn messenger and the playstation network that does not allow me to connect to them?
Anyways I never used the wireless on this router at all.  I was going to once I got a laptop but now I am not sure if this router is functioning properly.
Why does it work when I connect the modem to the LAN port and not in the WAN port of the router?

Regards

What is the make and model of your modem?

Is there a hard reset button on the modem?

One thing I did not mention yet is in the internet setup page where you see the option that says "copy computers mac address" . If you select that, then use the router to connect using PPOE again, see if you can get to hotmail and msn and PSN.

Hi,
my modem is an NTT VH-100.
No I do not see a hard reset on this modem.

Yes I did copy the mac address button, also I manually entered the PS3's MAC address onto the routers page.
If I cannot get this to work in the next few days, can I send you my router so you can take a look at it?

I wish I could find something in english when searching that modem. From what I could gather, if the information is correct, your modem has routing capabilities as well as that I read in one instance where the ISP was actually blocking some sites. Not sure if that is true or not.

Try this. Connect your computer directly to the modem. DO not connect to the internet. Do an ipconfig and see if your lan address has changed to 192.168.1.x if not, then manually set your lan adapter to 192.168.1.5 submask 255.255.255.0 gway 192.168.1.1 and can just leave the DNS server blank since we are not resolving any hosts. If you want dns in there put the 192.168.1.1.

In the browser type in http://ntt.setup/ and see if it gets you into the configuration or at the least, asks for login information. If you get page cannot be displayed, then replace it with http://192.168.1.1. and see if there is any hint that you can log into the modem.

I found the website that sells those things.

I had to google translate it but here is the url. tell me if this is what your modem looks like. it's the only v100 series I could find, and it's discontinued. (i would see if the ISP has updated versions)

http://74.125.91.132/translate_c?hl=en&sl=ja&tl=en&u=http://www.web116.jp/shop/netki/100/100_n_00.html&prev=_t&usg=ALkJrhjDAeR93FAVZXbSQ9KOjmff6_m9TA

it states it is a router which makes my previous suggestion more valid.

See, what i'm figuring, since you have access to the internet when the dlink router is acting as a switch only, is that there seems to be some compatibility issues or routing conflicts between the dlink and the modem.
