I'm looking at getting the DIR-825 and currently have the DIR-655 which works great.  I was wondering if I can set the 825 as my primary wireless router, but delegate the 655 as an extra "hub" to connect more components to.  So I'd like to directly connect the 655 a port on the 825 and have my devices connect to the 655.  So the 825 would server internet and so on.  I hope I'm making sense.

I don't need the 655 as an AP as I already have my media devices connected to my DAP-1522.  I'd like to get the 825 so I can use the 5GHz channel for my media devices via the DAP-1522.

You can turn the 655 into an AP.

Did you read my post?  I specifically said I don't want the 655 as an AP.  I want to connect it directly to the 825 like you would with a switch.

Then turn off the wifi radio then you'll be good.

Aha, cool.  I guess that's the new term these days.  I couldn't remember if it was to act as a gateway or bridge.  I guess an AP can also be set up hard-wired to another router.    Thank you.

Oh, one more easy question.  What's the hardware revision on the latest 825 right now?  I just want to make sure I purchase one that is the latest release.  Thanks again.

Before I plunk down my hard-earned $$$ on this, it's got a LOT of negative reviews on Amazon.  Are you able to comment on this at all?  I love all the d-link products I have as they've never given me any issues and I have the DWA-160, DIR-655, DAP-1522 and DWA-556.  I can't help but be leary of going with the 825 due to so many negative reviews as it seems unreliable.  I'm mainly looking at going with the 825 so I can use the 5GHz band with the DAP-1522 which is what all my HD media devices are connected to.

If you're happy with the 655 and don't need additional wireless coverage then you can just add a multiport switch.  It would be cheaper (I got an 8 port Dlink switch for about $32) and you wouldn't be buying a 1.5 or 2 year old router design(I got my 825-B1 back in June 2010).

I have a 655 in my basement as a main router and wireless zone A.  Then a DGS-2208 switch two floors up to get hard wired internet for my main computer/game/media room.  My 825 is on the other side of the house and is wired to the 655 and is used as wireless zone B.

Initially I had DSL internet so when I got the 825 I just replaced the 655, but when I switched to cable I decided to change the phone connector wiring to net wiring.  I added the switch so I could get more direct internet connections and started using the 655 again to get additional wireless coverage.

Keep in mind the 5GHz band doesn't have much range compared to 2.4GHz.  As a said before the 825 is  at least 1.5 maybe 2 year old hardware design. There are supposed to be newer designs that give you better 5GHz coverage, but I don't have any experience with those routers.

I already have a switch on my DAP-1522 and it works great.  As I mentioned, my primary reason is in adding the 825 is for the dual band 5GHz support so I can increase my bandwidth on wireless to the DAP-1522.  I don't really have the option of running cable.

Yep.  My 1522 and 655 are less than 20 feet away with one wall in between.  When I use my DWA-160 on a laptop, I'm at most 35-40 feet away so not much coverage is needed really, but thanks for the info.  Should I be looking at the media routers like the DIR-827?  It's much more expensive.

I personally wouldn't but I haven't checked their specs or reviews.  I've been a loyal Dlink user, but I have a feeling that they have not invested in R&D in the past 2 years.  Now they are more of a "brand" name then a router technology leader.

I tend to agree to a point with you. I have the 657 router and really don't see any differences while using it from the 655 router. Also every time a Mfr comes out with new SW or HW, aren't we always trying to figure out the bugs for them? LOL.


I have not had a chance to get any experiences with the 827 as of yet. Hope to maybe in the future. I would keep the 825, it's a solid router. I use mine at the moment as a AP. When it was host router I thought it was almost even better than my DGL-4500. Both are good routers when set up well.

I have an 825 and am getting poor wireless thru a 1 wall, with both 2.5 and 5.  We are talking a 1 story house, distance between router and device is 600ft.  6.5Mbps  to a Cisco 610 Bridge.  only one available at the time.     ( I am thinking of getting a different router (maybe other than Dlink) and using my 825 as an AP.  Do you think the Dlink products of late are not up to par?  I thought about Asus or Netgear.

Is  there a setting I might be missing?
