i was wondering why the speed was so low between pc and nas, so i did a little test:
pc1 : old celeron pc
pc2 : new laptop
nas : dns-320
sw  : gigabit switch
file  : copy a file size of 5GB
cabling: cat 6

file from nas(auto or 100Mbit) via switch to pc1: 6MB/s
file from nas(auto or 100Mbit) via switch to pc2: 6,5MB/s
file from nas(1000Mbit) via switch to pc1: 9MB/s
file from nas(1000Mbit) via switch to pc2: 9,5MB/s
file from nas(1000Mbit) to pc1: 9MB/s
file from nas(1000Mbit) pc2: 9,5MB/s
file from pc1/pc2 via switch to pc2/1: 55MB/s
file from pc1/pc2to pc1/pc2: 80MB/s

I found out that on dns-320 u cannot switch directly from low to high transfer speed. U have to select auto first..
Why is dns320 copy so slow compared to pc1 to pc2?

For FE (100Mbps) connection, the transfer rate should be around 11MBps. For GE (1Gbps) connection, the transfer rate is around 20 to 40MBps.

I get writes in DNS320 around 12-15Mb/s, and reading about 15-25Mb/s in a gigabit lan

in my lan (gigalan switch 1000 cable cat 5e) 20mb/s write 30mb/s read.

this isnt normal for me.

maybe the switch have some problem.

which firmware are you using? some people reported bad perfomance on 2.02

I get similar speeds. I think the cabling is the problem since it's an old Cat5e cable (installed in the wall) and it's quite long (about 15m). I'll have to try again with the NAS connected directly to the PC and see if that changes anything.

I bought a DNS320 a couple of days ago, uppgraded to 2.02. I only get around 8-10 MB/s maximum file transfer with gigabit connection.

Yesterday I switched cat5e cables for cat6 thinking it was the problem but It is still that slow.  I have a drive with 5900rpm drive, it cant be the problem right?

I also tried to connect tthe DNS-320 directly to my macbook using a crossover cable but I could not connect to the NAS that way.  

EDIT: Ooops! I just noticed that my router is only 100Mb Ethernet ports, its only has 1Gbit WAN port. I guess i have to buy a Gigabit-switch or try to succeed to connect directly to the macbook with cable. Sorry

Using NAS Performance Tester v1.3 running 5 loops of 1GB for read and write and here are my results:
Hooked up to a 1GB LAN.

Read:  58 MBps
Write:  22 MBps

Seems like a good xfer rate, especially for a sub $100 2-bay NAS.

Agreed, your result is the fastest I have come across. What is the HD brand/model and network equipment used in your setup?

HDD - two 2TB WD Green in RAID 0.
Router - Dlink DIR-655

I too use a dir 655, and I have seen those read speads before.
 
 But 2 factors needed to met. The drives had less than 1/3 capacity filled if not new/empty. 2) I used ext 2 format from a swapping the drive directly from a dns 323.(yes it works no problem, not the 321 tho)

I saw low 40 writes speeds too! and I used individual mounts no raid.
