DIR-655 Problems Staying Connected
« on: January 02, 2012, 05:42:46 AM »

Modem Type: Motorola Surfboard (SB6121)
ISP: Charter Communications, Cable Internet

Unsure why this happens exactly, but every time the D-Link System restarts itself (and at on other random occurrences ever few hours), my D-Link DIR-655 becomes unable to re-connect to the internet. I can only assume it maintains a connection to the modem itself as the "globe" icon on the router becomes orange. No matter how long I wait, the router will not reconnect to the internet.

I am unsure where the problem lies either within the Router or the Modem, but it seems the other routers I own do not have this same problem. The odd thing is that the modem's "internet connection" light never goes out, and the "link" light remains on.

The only solution seems to be restarting both the router and the modem, restarting just one won't do.  Anyone have any experience with this issue? Thanks.

I will provide any additional relevant info if needed.

What is this DLink System your referring too? This the 655 router or something else?

I have the 6121 and just upgraded to a 6180 and have had the 655 online for days and days now.
Ensure the cable line going to the modem is in good condition. Sometimes ISP wont check there lines for quality. Demand it.

Ensure there isn't any T.V. line splitters on the cable line going into the modem. Having more will lower the signal the modem is getting thus causing disconnects. You can check he status of the 6121 modem by going to it's modem page at 192.168.100.1. It's commended if you need a line splitter, to only have one and a good quality one.

Swap cable between modem and router. Sometimes these in box cables are not make well. I recommend CAT6 and the shorter the better if possible. I use a 1 footer.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

this is the DIR-655 Router, yes.

There are no line splitters on the cable line. I'm currently using the generic out-of-the-box Ethernet cable that came with the router, getting a new one is as simple as going out and buying one (I will be replacing it but I don't think that's what's causing the issue)

The hardware Version of the router is: B1
The Firmware out of the box was 2.00NA

Going to give all your suggested settings a try.

Alight, I caught it in the act.

Not sure why exactly, but the router just now reset itself.  Just completely rebooted. Not sure if some kind of setting changed or if it just overheated.  It's new (opened the box two days ago), so I really don't think that would be the case.  It's sitting in a 70-65 degree room (comfortable for my tastes) with all its vents uncovered/ unclogged. Once again, had to reboot the modem and the system to get connected again.

Any ideas?

I can't really tell, I've made all the changes and now it's just a waiting game.

Been three days and no problems. Looks like it was a setting error all along. Thanks!

You should setup your dir-655 router with the Dynamic IP instead of a STATIC IP to prevent the router lost IP connection with the modem.
