I am in the exact same predicament and this post appears to provide a viable solution for me.  Thanks.

dallen, I did notice in this post that you were able to format the new HDD as ext3 ("I selected ext3 and standard volume (not RAID or JBOD)").  How did you do this?  I did not see this option during the initial configuration/formatting process.  I want to format the disk so my daughter's Mac can use it in addition to my son's Microsoft PC.
