Enabling 150mbps (currently stuck with 65mbps)
« on: January 02, 2012, 10:51:11 AM »

I've been a happy user of DIR-600 for over a year. Now that it is 2012, my cable broadband got upgraded to 100/10M (from previous 10/10M) connection. With a ethernet cable to the router, I can transfer data at full 100M speed over the internet. However the wireless network is for some reason stuck with (G-speed) 54mbps. I'm using an wireless-N enabled iMac (late 2009).

I tried to tweak all the settings I could think of to enable 150mbps, but I wasn't able to do that. Is it possible to get full advantage of my internet connection with this router or is the 150 just a false claim? How can I force the device to use 150mbps transfer rate? Or would I be better off upgrading to a better wireless N router?

The router is European version B2 and I have updated its firmware to 2.06.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode N or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.

Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

I'm using mixed mode (n/g/b).
I'm using WPA2 Personal with both TKIP and AES.
I just turned off Short Gi, but couldn't find option for Extra Wireless Protection.
No difference in transfer rate, still under 54mbps.

Tried single mode N, no difference in transfer rate. Also, the network is still seen as "802.11b/g" in AirRadar in this Mac.

Is the Mac connecting at the higher rate.
Be aware that connection rates are different from actual file xfer rates. There not the same not will the xfer rates be achieved as the same as the connection rates.

How can I check whether or not my Mac is connecting at a higher rate?
The AirPort utility doesn't tell me any details.

I belive the current connection rate is 54M and actual transfer rate around 35-42Mbps (3-4mB/s).
With ethernet cable, the connection rate is 100M and actual transfer rate is 60-90Mbps (6-9mB/s). I just can't connect this iMac permanently with cable, because it's located in another room.

Open the Network Utility under Applications/Utility on the Mac.

According to the network utility:

65 Mb/s (still not 150)

It also says that my wifi card supports 802.11a/b/g/n

And you are in Single mode N, Auto channel? Do you have 20 or auto 20/40? Should be auto. WPA and AES only. Possible that the iMac doesn't support anything over 65Mb however My Mac Book Pro 2008 supports 130 and 300 on either 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz so I would assume that your iMac should connect at least at 130.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Yes, Single mode N, auto channel, 20/40Mhz auto, WPA/WPA2 AES Only. Still 65Mb/s.

There is a single concrete wall between the router and the iMac, but as iMac reports full signal, I don't think that's the issue.

In Apple website, under my iMac specs: Built-in AirPort Extreme 802.11n Wi-Fi wireless networking, just like with your MBP. I doubt Apple would have limited it to so slow speed as 65Mb/s.

Yes, Teamviewer is a possibility.

What HW and FW version is this router?

Also any chance you have a different router that you can test your iMac out on? I might recommend taking the iMac to a different place that has N WiFi however not easy to carry around unless it's mobile.

HW B2, FW 2.06.
Unfortunately this is my only router to test with. The iMac is 27" version, so it would be quite heavy to bring it somewhere for testing.

I posted pics of the wireless settings:

What region of the world are you in?
I would also turn off Protected WiFi, not needed if you connect using the PW on the WiFi.
