DIR 825 wireless connection
« on: January 03, 2012, 06:27:46 AM »

I just purchased a DIR 825 yesterday and so far I am pleased but my wireless connection is not very strong all over my apartment.  I have a small apartment and this does not make sense.  I tried using my DIR 628 as a wireless repeater and got it to work but my NAT was moderate which is not good for online games.  Do i have to forward ports on both routers or just one router and if so what router should my ports be forwarded on.  Also what router should i use QoS on, 1 or both.  can somebody help me to optimize my wireless connection as i do miss playing online matches.

What games do you play, PC or console? If console or XBL, review the gaming and gamefuel sticky for setting up QoS

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz. Turn 5Ghz radio off if your not using it or have devices that support it.

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.

Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Im setting this up for XBL
my router is DIR 825 version B1
firmware is version 2.06NA
ISP is cable
Modem is motorola SURFboard model SB6120
I tried setting up the QoS rules and i had a message saying IP address is invalid.
If i use my DIR 628 as a wireless repeater and i have my ports forwarded on the DIR 825 do i need to forward the same ports on the 628.
I would prefer to run a 50ft CAT6 cable to my living room but my girlfriend doesnt want cables all over the place.
One last thing, can i get a step by step for what to input into the QoS engine rules

How is the 628 set up? Is it wired to the 825? If so then make sure you turn off the DHCP server on the 628 and all other features like firewall, QoS, Protected WiFi and such on the 628. Just configure the wireless. You'll need to connect the 628 via LAN cable to the 825 using the LAN ports on the back of the 628. Do not use the WAN port on the 628.

I would prefer to run a 50ft CAT6 cable to my living room but my girlfriend doesnt want cables all over the place. Any chance you can runing along the floor by the wall and or behind furniture? Wired is preferred.

One last thing, can i get a step by step for what to input into the QoS engine rules. Follow the Gaming and Gamefuel Sticky in the forum. It works great man. You have a great modem and router combination man. I had the 6120 and now have a 6180. Good modems.
Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer.

Let us know how it goes.

The Dir-825 being a dual band router looses a little coverage because it is a dual band design, but as a router it completely rocks. There is a couple of things you can do. A cat 6 cable is a great option for gaming with XBL, but if you are going to use only 2.4Ghz and NEVER turn on 5Ghz on the Dir-825, a set of high gain WiFi antennas may just be what the doctor ordered, make sure you keep the old antennas because if you ever decide to go 5Ghz, you will need the old antennas(they are dual band antennas).

Also, if you are using a XB 360 slim, the WiFi in Xbox 360 slims is deaf/on the weak side, a good gaming adapter hooked up through the Ethernet port will help out if you have a slim. My kid(18) was ready to pounce on me when I bagged on his brand new slim that could not connect to my network. I connected a Dlink gaming adapter and never moved the XB 360 slim, it was up and running using the D-link gaming adapter from where the slim would not connect with it's built in WiFi. If this is the case, make sure you get one that has "N" built in.

I am using the SB6120 and a Dir-825, I have IPV6 up and running. Last weekend my boys and their friends had 3 XB 360 slims all connected through the Dir-825 with no lags, not even a complaint. I use "N" mode only. I had just upgraded my internet speed, so that helped. Getting ready to add a 4th kid, but he does not have a slim, just an Xbox 360, he was going to buy the Microsoft adapter but I pointed him towards D-Link, then we will see if 4 Xboxes playing gears of war 3 can bring down or lag my network........

This is all going on while my wife is on Facebook and I am streaming Blockbuster!

Furry will treat you right and get you going! Me, just a 48yo engineer that hangs out from time to time to bag on Furrys slow internet speed at home!

A few holes drilled in the wall, a staple gun and a 50 foot CAT6 cable and I should get a perfect hassle free connection.  For now everything seems to be working ok.

Speaking of piggy backing, I need to Hijack this thread for a moment. Since I am a newbie and all:

My morning speed test directly to the Dir-825 is 98Mbps, but when I go through a laptop with the same config, a 300Mbps wireless connection, I am down to 75Mbps, another site tested direct at 75Mbps but 50Mbps on the wireless laptop(2 sites showing 25 Mbps of overhead at high speed). Is WPA2 overhead really that much? The laptop is a brand new quad core running Windozs 7 just like the desktop. I never seen this when I lived in 25Mbps land, I lost some, but that would have killed my last connection........

You are the only person I know that has sync as fast as me, so I figured you may have already walked this walk.

I might turn off the AP and go directly to the Dir-825 WiFi tonight.

Later,

Pat
