I upgraded my DSL ATT service to U-Verse and got a 2 wire router 3801HGC, speed is good, but I have some dead spots around the house.  I want to use my old DIR 655 as an access point to cover these spots,  I read some older posts talking about the same, my question here is have anyone of the forum members tried with the U-Verse routers?
Is the procedure the same?

If your using the U-verse as the host modem and router, then you should be ok. If you are also using the U-verse for wifi, you can try to use the 655 as an AP and use the same SSID however you'll need to make sure the 655 is set up for a different channel. I would highly recommend if your using the U-verse as the host router and modem that you change out the 655 router for a DAP model AP device from D-Link as they are probably better suited for bringing wireless to areas in a building and extended ranges and you dont' have to hassle with a router that really isn't designed for that use.
