Can not connect to internet with DIR-825 B1 2.6NA
« on: January 13, 2012, 12:04:23 AM »

Hi all! I have a simple(?) problem with my old router. I had this for 2 years but I never used it till today. So its brand new, just without warranty :P. Long story short, this router can't connect to internet. I tried resetting the router, newest firmware, stock firmware, chaining the Ethernet wire, etc. Nothing would work. The weird thing is, I can connect to the router both wirelessly and through the Ethernet port, but the router can't "communicate" with my Netgear cg3000d. I used the wizard to set it up. Please help!

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

As your trying to get the 825 to connect to the MODEM, have a web page open on the 825 and review the Status/Device Info/Wan section. You can see live results as it's trying to connect to the modem. You should see a 192.168 or ##.##.###.### address in the WAN IP address field.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

That NG modem has a built in router already and wireless.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?- I have charter cable
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?- I mentioned it earlier but its Netgear-cg3000d
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?- Not specified
I don't know if the "default" cable is cat 6...

My netgear has issues with wifi. I can't establish 300mbps connection with my Alienware m17x (Killer Wireless-N 1103). And tends to be slower with other laptops(only getting 140mps) and handheld devices(only 10mbps with itouch 4thgen and SGS). It will cost me 70bucks just to call the guys and probably another 100 for replacing my modem. So, why not save $170 and use what I have? All of my Ethernet ports are functional for my Netgear, so it's not worth it to go though the hassle.

You need to setup the 825 manually.  Follow the directions in the 825 manual under section 2 installation - Connect to Another Router.  The Netgear modem has a built in router(I didn't see a way to disable the router) so you're using the 825 only as a WAP and switch.

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

If you can't get the ISP modem to bridge then use the DMZ, if it has this option, input the IP address the 825 gets from the ISP Modem and put it into the DMZ on the ISP MODEM. I think it has a DMZ option.

If not then your option would be either to install a network switch and a AP device for wifi or turn the 825 into an AP.
