-1MB free on RAID 1 after format?
« on: January 20, 2012, 12:07:10 PM »

This week my DNS-323 disappeared from the network, after working reliably for several years. When I logged into it, the control page prompted me to format the drives. I knew this wasn't good. I elected to skip that and checked the logs, but saw no entry. Oddly, the drive lights were showing blue, not amber, and the status page showed correct size & serial info for the two (500GB WD Caviar Green) HDs--but showed 0MB used and 0MB free. So somehow the device apparently ruined my RAID 0 array. Fortunately, data on it was backed up.

I powered down the device, removed the drives, reinserted them with care to good seating, restarted, and again saw the same as before. So I did one more power cycle and then this time when through the config process to set up the drives--this time as a RAID 1 with 498GB capacity. The format took ~20 minutes but completed successfully.

Or so it said. Volume_1 did now show up as a valid SMB share on the network, but I got access errors every time I tried to copy files to it. I verified that permissions were still set correctly (they were--R/W for Everybody), and then checked the Status page. It says two 500 GB drives are installed, RAID 1 is set up, used space is 0MB and -- here's the weird part -- available space is -1MB!

Again, all lights are blue, and there is no hint of a problem in the system logs. Is there some sort of diagnostic I can run to help figure out what is going on?

Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

I updated the firmware from 1.09 to 1.10 (latest). After the update, the DNS recognized the RAID 1, showed the correct RAID configuration on TOOLS > RAID (previously RAID type shown as System of Disks and Reformat button was grayed out), and copying works from networked PCs.

So if anyone runs into symptoms like this, I suggest updating (or reinstalling) the firmware.
