Hello,

My roommate has an Airport Extreme Base Station router that broadcasts simultaneously in both 2.4ghz and 5ghz. Both bands have the same SSID and I can see them using inSSIDer. The router is located downstairs and has to pass through a ceiling and two walls to get to the DAP-1522 bridge-mode.

On the wireless network page on the device it is set to the following setting and is grayed out.
802.11 Band : 2.4GHz/5GHz

What does this setting mean? Does it mean that the bridge will pick up whatever band has the best signal at the time. So if the 5ghz band isn't getting through the walls very well then it will just use the 2.4ghz band automatically?

I really want it to use the 5ghz band if possible since I stream alot. I live in an apartment complex so there are about 50 wireless routers broadcasting in 2.4ghz that I can pick up with inSSIDer. My roommates router is the only one broadcasting in 5ghz.

I'd appreciate any input. Thank you.

Best thing to do us to run the 1522 in AP mode and run a wire from the host router to the 1522. Run the 5Ghz radio on the 1522 if your connecting devices support 5Ghz. Be aware that 5Ghz is susceptible to building materials, walls, doors and such and will lower the signal strength. Due to the high frequency of 5Ghz, it's best to be line of site or maybe one wall away. You can use the same SSID as the AirPort Extreme, however just make sure the channel is different on between the 2 wifi's.

FYI, Having so many other WiFi routers using 2.4Ghz near by is causing WiFi congestion and thus free, clear and open channels are being used up and thus causing router disconnection as the routers are trying to find a good channel to use. We are seeing this in more populated areas.
