No thumbnails on Samsung TV
« on: February 06, 2012, 12:48:28 AM »

I've managed to connect my Samsung TV to my DNS-320 to view photos and videos. However, I only see the file names, no thumbnails, which makes browsing really painful. How can I get the thumbnails to show up on my TV? I haven't found any setting on the TV that would help.

hi

I have the same issue and I don't think there is a solution. It's because the media player on the TV views the data on the NAS as being part of a network (which of course it is). If you plug in a USB device directly to the TV you will see that everything works as it should but this defeats the purpose of the NAS in this inistance.

I'm not sure where the fix for this (and also the fact the the media is not in order) lies....i.e. Samsung or D-Link and if one even exists. Basically the media player on the Samsung is not very good!

Ok, good to hear I'm not alone with this problem... However, I thought generating thumbnails should be part of the UPnP standard which both the Samsung TV and the NAS support. Or am I wrong?

This is the same for LG TV's and Bluray players - No thumbs, but if reading from a USB stick I get thumbs.

I looked a little further into this. Some 3rd party media servers will solve the problem.

First you will need to install the Fonz Fun Plug onto your DNS 320. This allows you to modify the NAS outside of its standard out-of-the-box functionality. It is straighforward...just follow the steps in the link

http://nas-tweaks.net/40/installation-of-the-fonz-funplug-0-5-for-ch3snas-ch3mnas-dns-323-and-many-more/

Part of the Fun Plug includes MediaTomb which is an open source media server. I find it works well for Audio but pictures and video need a little configuration on the Samsung. Look around the same website for tutorials plus on the MediaTomb website.

Alternatively install Twonky Media. Once running this Media Server is extremely straighforward and media sorting and thumbs were immediately apparent on my Samsung TV. Use the following tutorial:

http://nas-tweaks.net/144/installation-of-twonkymedia-server-6-on-the-conceptronic-ch3mnas-and-the-d-link-dns-320-and-dns-343/

You get 30 days free before havinig to purchase the licence for 15 Euros. There are apps for android and iOS to control / shift media too

Something to note on the FFP walkthrough though....if you disable Telnet as per the last step and your SSH password did not store in the 320 then you will not be able to issue remote commands without going through the set-up again and reinstalling

Note 2 - once Twonky is running I suggest setting the rescan on the web interface to 0 minutes (unless you are frequently updating files and don't want to do it manually). DO NOT set it to -1....for some reason this disables the GUI

Good luck!
