1. Have DSL via ISP provided Speed Stream 4200 modem/router.
2. Was using a hub and a separate wireless access point.
3. Hub and WAP removed and replaced with DIR-601.
4. Ethernet to my laptop and wireless to my iPhone and HP wireless printer work perfectly.
5. Laptop application WS_FTP has an issue.

From my laptop on ethernet, I can launch my ws_ftp application and move files to my REMOTE server perfectly. If the ws_ftp application stays launched but unused for about one minute, my next ftp attempt is delayed by about 30 seconds.

Restated...
 a. I log in an push a file to my remote server. All is well.
 b. I edit an additional file. The editing takes about one minute. I then push that file to my remote server. The ftp tranfer is not instantaneous. I get a busy indication for about 30 seconds, then the file transfers.
 c. If I continue to do immediate transfers, all is well, but if the ftp application lies idle for more than a minute, the next transfer is again "busy" for about 30 seconds.

If I remove the DIR-601 from service and ethernet my laptop directly to the Speed Stream, the ftp process works perfectly every time without any delay.

Tech support said my Speed Stream needed to be in bridge mode. It is now in bridge. The problem persists. Then they tried virtual server settings, port forwarding settings, and application rules. The problem persists.

The hub and WAP setup worked perfectly.
The laptop-ethernet-Speed-Stream works perfectly.
The DIR-601 setup... not so much.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

I would contact the Mfr of the WS_FTP application and ask for support there as well. There could be known issues and help for this application there when using routers.

I've tried it with anti-virus off. I will now set PC firewall to off.

I would contact the Mfr of the WS_FTP application and ask for support there as well. There could be known issues and help for this application there when using routers.

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

Interesting. Maybe this will tell you something.

I downloaded and installed FileZilla. I am not familiar with the client, but I did move a file via drag-and-drop. While figuring out what I might want to do next, which took maybe a minute, I noticed that the status line jumped and indicated that the program was now "disconnected from server." Here's a snippet from the status area on FileZilla:

Disconnected from server
Status:   Resolving address of .....
Status:   Connecting to .....
Status:   Connection established, waiting for welcome message.

So it is my guess that FileZilla is showing me what is happening. Apparently the ftp client, be it ws_ftp or FileZilla, is disconnecting after about a minute. The delay I experience with ws_ftp is apparently the client trying to, finally successfully, logging in again.

Opinion?

Is there a KEEP ALIVE setting in those applications somewhere. What you just said makes me think that that application is set for one transaction and automatically disconnects after it's completed. If you can turn on or find something that says KEEP ALIVE? This I think would be a option here.

The application works perfectly when I bypass the DIR-601. It also worked perfectly with my old hub/wap setup (until the wap died). I understand how computers problems are often not what they appear to be, but it does seem to me that the issue is the DIR-601. I will write ws_ftp again and ask them about keeping the client alive. Can't hurt.

Understand man. There was probably minor differences on your hub and AP that differ from this router. These routers are a bit more complicated at times when setting them up. Routers usually have to manage and scan traffic and filter things more than other devices. All this is in the coding. hub and AP are mainly just that, connects that pass along traffic to the modem and thus don't do any sort of trafffic filtering and management. This router should still work, just might need to find the option. I know that one option I think I remember seeing on some clients though. I would also make sure that the remote server supports that option too. I presume it does since it worked before.

One thing you might try as well is put your PC that you working with on the 601s DMZ and test.

I put the 601 into DMZ using the ip that the 601 assigned to my laptop. I rebooted everything and gave it a go. The problem remains, which is discouraging. I have not yet heard back from the techs as ipswitch (ws_ftp people).

I did an experiment where I pushed a file to the server every 15 seconds. That kept it alive as I guessed it would. I was able to continue moving files long past the normal one minute timeout.

Good test. I think that kind of proves that you probably need to find and enable the Keep Alive option on the application. Might search the help file for that. Keep us posted.

Yep.... I could not find a Keep Alive feature within the application. The WS_FTP techs told me where to find it. They require the Keep Alive feature be set within each individual site. There is no global setting. Probably not a big deal for most users, but I have over 100 sites that I maintain. Each will require a manual edit. That's OK. I'll work'em as I get'em

The Keep Alive feature solved the problem. I set it to bump the server every ten seconds, and it works! That said, I would not have discovered my solution without your suggestion to try FileZilla, and then I only discovered it because I saw the client disconnect within FileZilla's status report.

I contacted D-Link support I don't know how many times. I started with a trouble ticket, then progressed to phone support (under warranty). The accent of the young lady on phone support was not of these states. So what's new. The troubleshooting tree she apparently followed provided no solutions. So what else is new. So, I came to the forum. I usually try other avenues first because I see too many people in the forums that won't do their own homework and are ungrateful when someone doesn't help fast enough. I don't want to be that guy.

Despite the visual I get when I read your forum nick out loud, I do appreciate your effort. Were it not for your persistence, I would still be chasing the problem. I didn't need Keep Alive with my hub/wap, but I need it with the 601. Didn't see that one coming.
