DIR-645 Whole Home Router: Won't connect to Internet (RESOLVED)
« on: February 08, 2012, 09:10:31 PM »

Just bought a D-Link 645 (brand new) to replace a DIR-625 (which worked, but has decreasing range).

Plugged in and performed manual configuration. Attempting to connect to Verizon DSL Internet -- using the ethernet (wired) connection.  Used same procotol as on the D-625, which was DHCP.

Windows 7 Home Premium reported could not connect to Internet.

Tried again, using the included CD. The router was configured properly , according to the software, but still could not connect.

Tested all the wire connections -- and they were snug. Cycled router and modem on and off. Still no connection.

Put the D-625 back in -- and Windows 7 connected to the Internet again.

Any guesses on why the new DIR-645 isn't connecting to the Internet that I might try?

Thanks!

I would configure the router from the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.

What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Just following up -- in case anyone else reads this post in the future.

Working with a standalone Westell modem - not a bridge.

Tried your tweaks. Still experienced the issue. Called D-Link customer service. Helpful, but nothing worked.

Called the ISP (Verizon). Verizon did a line test -- and then everything worked (without having to touch the modem or router). Apparently, just changing the router -- and the network couldn't connect. It was baffling, since if the old router was plugged in -- everything worked fine.

So if anyone who reads this post in the future reads this, call your ISP. Maybe it's just a matter of resetting the line from their end -- and things will work.

Working with a standalone Westell modem - not a bridge.
Its recommended to bridge DSL modem and let the 645 handle the incoming connection. Having modems in non bridged mode and introduce some connection issues with certain applications and services.

Glad you got the problem figured out. Hope you enjoy the router. Please review some of the suggestion for setting the 645 up better for you.

Enjoy.

Hi. Is there a setting in the router that will allow it to bridge the connection?

If your ISP is using PPPoE, need to bridge on the modem, then use the PPPoE setting under setup/internet/manual/connection type.
