lowered internet speed
« on: February 12, 2012, 06:15:31 PM »

When I connect a computer directly to my cable modem, I get download speeds in the range of 35MBit/sec - the speed is fairly consistent across multiple attempts.

When I connect my DIR-825 revB router to the cable modem, and my computer to the router, I get download speeds in the range of 18 to 20 MBit/sec. So the speed is lower, and it is less consistent across runs too.

I performed the experiments with only the computer plugged into the router. There was nothing else attached to the router at that time, and I disabled wireless to make sure nothing else on the system was using up the bandwidth. I just upgraded to firmware 2.06NA, and all the settings are default.

Any suggestions?

Try disabling "Automatic Uplink Speed" under Advanced(QOS Engine).  If that doesn't improve the speed try disabling Traffic Shaping and Qos Engine.

Some things to try:
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and Single mode on 5Ghz?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Disabling automatic uplink speed, QoS and traffic shaping did not help.

I had already unplugged all devices except for the one computer.

For the purposes of speed testing, I have disabled wireless networking.

I am using the same PC for speed testing with and without the router, so I don't think it is firewall or virus settings on the PC as higher speed is obtained w/o the router.

I'm using a relatively short cat5e cable between the router and the cable modem, I'll try switching to a cat6 cable.

Additionally I have not reserved IP addresses up to now, but I will also try that.

My 825 is currently using v2.05 FW. I have 50down and 2up.
Keep us posted.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.
