DIR-825B1 upload & download speeds have deteriorated
« on: February 16, 2012, 08:26:27 AM »

Had a problem losing connection from cable modem to my ISP, complete powerdown/disconnect of modem would resolve issue, but that wasn't something that my wife could do while I was at work! Techs from ISP fixed that issue, but discovered that the 25D/2U service I pay for is really bad when the 825 is connected to the modem. Computer direct to modem was 30D/5U, but through the 825 is 17-20D/.8-.9U.
825 is <1 yr old. Performance is same from any computer connected to it, wired or w/l-n. Original f/w was 2.02NA, flashed to 2.05NA soon after put in service. After performance problem discovered, did a factory reset, reloaded saved configuration settings, believe I have things pretty much set as recommended on this forum. Flashed to 2.06NA, went back through the settings again and have seen no difference in performance.
Would like to upgrade my service, but until I am getting the performance I'm paying for now, it would be a waste of money!

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand alone Motorola SB5101U
Stand Alone or built in router? Stand alone DIR-825B1

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. On
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking On
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. On
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Not sure
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Enabled, I think.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/Auto TPIK and AES. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only. WPA2, I think
What wireless devices do you have connected? 1 laptop, sometimes when I'm home
Any cordless house phones? Panasonic DECT 6.0 (1.9GHz)
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out. There are some others, but the problem isn't any different for wired computers.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. Not sure.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic. All tests on all computers have been performed with Windows Firewall and AV/AMW software installed and running, with/without router bypassed
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing. Router speed tests have been performed w/wo all other devices on - no detectable difference in results.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.Old 2M CAT5 cable was replaced with brand new 1M CAT5E cable by ISP tech.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.
 See my PM.

Stand Alone or built in router? <This refers to the ISP Modem. However knowing about the 5 series Motorola modems, they don't have a built in router.  ;)

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.Old 2M CAT5 cable was replaced with brand new 1M CAT5E cable by ISP tech. <I recommend using Cat 6 when and where you can. Shorted length possible between modem and router. I use a 1 footer on mine. And you already know to look into a SB 6121 modem.  ;D
