The first list below contains published D-Link USA approved and verified Hard Drives (HDDs). The second list contains HDDs tested by D-Link forum community end users. If you would like to contribute a HDD you personally tested to this list, please post the HDD make/model/capacity, configuration, length of time in use, and observations (e.g. stability, performance, etc) as a reply to this thread.

Please add Seagate model ST3500320AS 500 GB, ran RAID 1 for well over a year.

Now both drives set to standard mode. Still running fine after 1 week.

Has anyone tried the new Western Digital RED drives?

Western Digital Red WD10EFRX 1 TB WD SATA III Intellipower 64 MB Cache
Western Digital Red WD20EFRX 2 TB WD SATA III Intellipower 64 MB cache
Western Digital Red WD30EFRX 3 TB WD SATA III Intellipower 64 MB Cache

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810

Per the website:

"Western Digital Red is the only hard drive designed for NAS systems that have 1-5 drive bays.
Available in capacities ranging from 1 TB to 3 TB, WD Red is designed specifically for home and small office NAS systems.
The drives are extensively tested for compatibility and reliability in the demanding operating environment of a 24x7 NAS system.
WD's exclusive NASware firmware technology enables seamless integration and balanced performance.
Innovative technology reduces power consumption and lowers the operating temperature, and with a 35% improvement in MTBF over desktop drives, WD Red is a more reliable and robust NAS hard drive solution"

Per Western Digital, these drives have been tested and are compatible with the following D-Link NAS:

DNS-1100-04
DNS-1550-04
DNS-1250-04 (US only)
DNS-1200-05
DNS-1250-06 (US only)

This sounds like the solution I was looking for, but I wanted to find out if D-Link was going to test these 3 drives and sign off on their compatibility with the DNS-320, 321, 323, 325 and 343?  Thank you!  ;D

From reading the WD marketing material you provided, it looks like these HDDs were designed for and tested on enterprise environments/hardware (i.e. rack mounted).

I don't work for Western digital, but I was excited about these drives, which are not made for Enterprise environments:
( those drive are the Western Digital RE class)

These drive are made specifically for Home NAS drives that have 1-5 drive bays running RAID.
From what I read:

"Western Digital Red is the only hard drive designed for NAS systems that have 1-5 drive bays"

WD Red is designed specifically for home and small office NAS systems"

NASware: Intelligent error recovery

With built in intelligent error recovery controls, NASware also prevents hard drives from being dropped off the RAID due to extended error recovery.  This provides more availability and less down time rebuilding the RAID.

This might be the case, but the DNS models that were tested (as per your earlier post) are all business class and rackmount systems. . . Very confused marketing.  ???

Are you sure D-Link can't confirm compatibility with the new Western Digital RED drives and the smaller D-Link NAS units, like the DNS-320, DNS-321, DNS-325 and DNS-343....

Otherwise, the Drobo's look like the best way to go. Please reconsider.  Thank you!

Re: DNS-325 - Compatible HDDs
« Reply #54 on: August 22, 2012, 05:02:55 AM »

Based on the cross compatibility between all of the products you mentioned, I would presume there is a high likelihood of compatibility, although you'll have to either test this for yourself or look for other DNS-325 owners who tested these HDDs. Unfortunately, D-Link does not take HDD compatibility requests. Aside from the periodic compatibility lists D-Link publishes, this forum is the next best source for such information based on DNS-325 owner contributions.

Western Digital tested their new RED series drives with the following NAS systems:

D-LINK:

DNS-1100-04
DNS-1550-04
DNS-1250-04 (US only)
DNS-1200-05

The first list below contains published D-Link USA approved and verified Hard Drives (HDDs). The second list contains HDDs tested by D-Link forum community end users. If you would like to contribute a HDD you personally tested to this list, please post the HDD make/model/capacity, configuration, length of time in use, and observations (e.g. stability, performance, etc) as a reply to this thread.

DNS-325 - Compatible with the new Western Digital RED drives!
« Reply #56 on: August 23, 2012, 07:41:10 PM »

Western Digital just updated their website:

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=810

WD Red NAS hard drives have been extensively tested for compatibility in 1-5 bay NAS systems in our FIT labs and AVL qualified with these key partners: D-Link, DROBO, Netgear, etc.

They just added the following D-Link NAS:

DNS-315
DNS-320
DNS-325
DNS-345

Re: DNS-325 - Compatible HDDs
« Reply #59 on: September 03, 2012, 05:17:09 PM »

Since Western Digital reported full compatibility, I ordered and finally received 2 Western Digital REDs - WD20EFRX - 2TB drives.

Since I knew the drives were coming, my data was already backed up, so I formatted the old 500 GB Seagate drives, and moved them to my older DNS-321 and set them up in Standard mode.

Then I installed the 2 - WD20EFRX - 2TB drives in the DNS-325 and set them up running RAID 1.

I spent most of Sunday transferring my media back to the DNS-325.

I am happy to report all is working fine, and the DNS-325 has never been quieter.   ;D
