Help with stability issue (internet disconnects)
« on: March 16, 2012, 02:57:43 PM »

Hi

I've started to bang my head against the wall here with my new d-Link 655 router and I am hoping anyone can help...

The router will drop my internet-connection every 2-5 minutes throughout the day (and night), and I'm drawing a complete blank on what it could be. I've had the router for a 5 days, and it's been flippin' me the finger since arrival  :-X

If I run the cable directly from the modem to my computer, the internet is stable. It's when I connect the router, then things turn ugly (wall->modem->router->PC).

Firmware; 2.00NA
Arrival; I completed the regular setup.
Day1 ; I disabled DNS
Day 4; I've set IP-adress on the router
Day 4; I've set static IP-adress on my desktop
... but it's still unstable

All and any help greatly appreciated. I am not at all tech-savvy, so please take it slow.

upgrade to the latest firmware on your local area, i think 2.07na, and configure static dns in the dialer on it.
disable qos engine and set firewall to Endpoint Independent with spi off.

No need to update FW at this time. Lets try some suggestions first. Besides there is a bug in v2.07 that breaks SharePort.
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Thank you very much FurryNutz. I have taken your list and checked off your suggestions during the day, but with no luck. Still as unstable as a house of cards in a hurricane. :(

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
          - DSL

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
         - Standalone

What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
          - Paradyne ADSL2+ 6200-series

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
          - 192.188.163.#

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
          - All off
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
          -Check
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
          -Check
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
          - Double-check
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
          - Check
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.
          - Check

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
          - I can change all this, my main concern is not the wireless as I prefer cable. I did not know the wireless transmission settings would impact stability of the wired-signal, does it?

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
          - WPA-personal, WPA-Only, TPIK and AES

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
          - Bucket-loads...

Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
          - Check

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
          - Check
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.
          - Check

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.
          - One of the first things I tried, cable does not seem to be the problem..

Any chance this can be bridged? I would be preferred to bridge the modem. If the modem can not be bridged then I recommend using the DMZ option on the Modem and input the IP address that the 655 router gets into the DMZ. This will bypass any modem management and should pass everything to the 655.

This can present some problems has the router is having to find a open channel in which is probably being used up. Were seeing more and more Wireless congestion in areas with large numbers of WiFi routers. I presume these are mostly on 2.4Ghz in the list? Im curious if you turned off the WiFi radio on the router, and wired up a PC, does the router work with out any disconnections?

Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Can you contact your ISP and ask then if the modem can be bridged or if it has a DMZ that you can access?

I believe I would have to speak to the ITS-Department here at the university. I live in an apartment administered through the university, and they provide the DSL.

I sent them an email earlier and asked if they could help me set up the router, but all I got back was a cranky reply how they do not support routers, and I seemed to have a working signal so I should be happy.

/rant
Ret*rded how they'll give the apartment one modem, and expect several uses to live off of that 1 connection
/rantoff

I will send them a new email and ask them if I can bridge the modem, and about the DMZ. Thank you so much so far for your help FurryNutz, appreciate it :)

Does this modem have 1 or 4 LAN ports in back.
Shame they wont be of any help.
Might see if you can find any default log in information from the MFR site for that modem and see if you can log in.
Try logging in at 192.168.1.1 and user and pw is both admin. See if that works.
Zhone/Pardyne

Only other thing I might suggest is that instead of using a external 655 router and if the ISP is unwilling to help you configure it, I would get a AP devices, like a DAP model device that just has wireless abilities. I recommend getting a 5Ghz radio one since you have a lot of other Wifi near by and they are probably mostly on 2.4Ghz. Having 5Ghz will be better for you.

I've tried all sort of combinations of the gateway I am given in CMD, and others I found online (just to be sure). plus the one you mentioned, but with no luck. It seems like my browser have to ponder whether or not to grant me access for a minute until "Google Chrome could not connect to xxx.xxx.x.x"

There's only 1 LAN port in the back. I've also scanned the support and forums of Zhone/Paradyne, found a few relevant threads, but as I can't access the modem I'm stuck unfortunately.

What's the difference between an DAP and the router I now have?
... all I need is to be able to connect a few printers on the network, 1-2 laptops and a desktop with a stable internet-connection

since the modem has a router built in, it's preferred to either bridge it effectively shutting it off and using an external which has better features, or use a AP device which doesn't have a router and just provides wifi and some wired access, thus using the modem as the router.
