'Use Unicasting' is selected by default in the Dynamic IP (DHCP) connection type.

I turned it off based upon the router's support text since the router gets an IP address from my cable modem.

I don't understand this option at all.  I've searched for data on the topic and I can't make sense of it.

I think I made the correct selection by un-selecting 'Use Unicasting.'

Someone please explain Unicasting to me.

The network topology (routing) is being handle by the DIR-655, not my Cable Modem SB6121.

I remain in the state of being confused, in other words.

Use what works best for your network. Contact the ISP to see if they recommend using Unicast or not.

Yeah I read your link earlier, so if unicasting is unchecked does the router only use multicasting?  If checked does the router use both?

Yeah not too much documentation on it, big surprise, from reading some articles sounds like it is best to leave it on but D-link support it "off", who knows


Anyway, just found this:

    The router uses the IGMP protocol to support efficient multicasting -- transmission of identical content, such as multimedia, from a source to a number of recipients. "

Ya, haven't hand much time to play with this. I've just left it ON as the default setting. I think there has been some users mentioned that there issues cleared up after turning it off. It's either going to work, make no changes or might do something. Not to complicated.

Talked with Harry, said he recommends leaving it and Multicast ON. They don't conflict and allows for greater compatibility. He said not a lot of things use it so really no harm in leaving it on.

It's basically an option that can be used if you are having trouble getting a DHCP address from your ISP.  if you have it unchecked and are getting an address from your ISP you can leave it unchecked.  Checking or unchecking only effects the WAN connection to your ISP.
