I had a “D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure”, connected to my HOME NETWORK, since November 2011, but now I can´t access, write or read data from said storage unit. I already try several times to perform a new installation and setup but I did not got any satisfactory results, so please help me to make again the proper installation and setup.

I am especially interested to know a procedure to repeat the installation and setup steps, but without formatting, erasing or losing the data the two hard disk drives that were originally configured as a mirror for disk redundancy in a single Volume, with the RAID 1 option.

In addition to any problem with my hardware of software It happened that when the application for the DNS-323 configuration is trying to access the D-LINK WEB SITE, I got the following message: “Could not Connect to web server 10.0.1.21”, so the configuration process was not completed.

It got a “D-Link DNS-323 2-Bay Network Attached Storage Enclosure”, with the following identification data:
Model: DNS-323
S/N: P1UJ2AA000951
PN: CNS323A….C1
H/W: Ver.: C1, F/W: Ver.: 1.08
MAC ID: 5CD998C3858A

The DNS-323 unit is equipped with two Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare Drives.

My HOME NETWORK is equipped with the local Internet provider Modem, one “APPLE Time Capsule Wi-Fi Hard Drive B272LL/A Model 1254, one  “TP-LINK 8-Port 10/100M Switch” Model TL-SF1008D, the DNS-323 Network Storage Unit, two Hewlett Packard Laptop PCs, two APPLE Laptops, and one HP Office Jet Pro K8600 Printer connected via the USB port of the DNS-323 Unit.

I think that the problem starts one week ago, when I was cleaning my desk and softly moving the DNS-323, the LEFT left drive LED illuminate AMBER as a signal of a drive failure. After that, I remove and insert again the LEFT Drive, and all LEDs illuminate blue again. Then, I manually rebuild the failed drive to eliminate a degraded disk warning message.

Then, It became too slow the process to read and write data from the DNS-323 Storage Unit. The access time was larger for folder with many files and in several cases, it was not possible to reach any files, and I got the message: “Volume 1 is not accessible”.

At that moment I try for the fist time to check or modify the configuration, so I access the Easy Search Utility but:

When I select APPLY in the LAN menu, a got the following massage:

“Set to dhcp client fail”

When I select CONNECT in the DRIVE MAPPING menu, a got the following massage:

“Set to Drive Mapping fail¨

At this moment, If I access the Easy Search Utility no any D-Link unit is found even if I select “Refresh”

First, you do have a backup of the data on the DNS-323 I hope - just in case there is a problem.
If not then you need to get an SATA to USB adapter or have an SATA hot plug caddy on one of your computers.  You can then use one of the drives from the NAS plugged into the adapter or caddy and computer, then with an IFS on the computer you can copy the data from the drive.

Second, your network is 10.0.1.xx - and the DNS-323 has the fixed IP of 10.0.1.21- correct?
The fact you got the “Set to dhcp client fail” message points to a possible problem with the network - check the seating of both the network and power cables at the back of the unit.  You can also try using another port on the switch.

Third, have you tried using a paperclip to reset the unit - between ethernet port and power port at the back of the unit.

If, after you have a backup of your data and have physically checked cables and done a reset and you still have problems, you can then try a direct connection between the NAS and one of your computers - if that works then you have a network problem, check indicator lights on the NAS, switch and computer.

I could not back up the data on the DNS-323 due to some one told me that the DNS-323 hardware use a internal LINUX compatible file system, but not compatible with Windows.

I think that the IP 10.0.1.21 was set by the TP-LINK 8-Port 10/100M Switch

I checked the seating of both the network and power cables at the back of the unit and I also try using another port on the switch. Finally I replace the Switch with not successfully results.

I reset the device, however I still have problem access folders and files stored in the hard drives:

After reset I happend the following:

The Easy Search Utility perfectly found the DNS-323 and provided the IP address

The hard drives info was checked with the DNS GUI Status Utility, both hard drives were present all the information seems to be OK.

The drive was successfully mapped with the Easy Search Utility.

Then I exit both applications (The DNS GUI and The Easy Search utility)

I access once the Volume1 folder with Windows Explorer however it took too much time to see the folder contain.

Then,  I tried again to access some folders inside Volume_1 but after some time I got the following Windows warning message:

\\DLINK – C358A\Volume_1 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The specified network name is not longer available.

Comment_1: Not any user access or read / write privileges, neither password has been set up previously.

Comment_2:  There is not problem to print using the printer connected to the DNS-323 USB Port.

Comment_3: Activity LED and Drives LEDs are almost permanently blinking.

Sincerely,

This can by done - you just need to download a ext2 driver for windows.  There are a number of free options - just Google them.

I would echo Ivan's comment to backup your data before doing anything further.

Switches don't assign IPs to clients - that is done by a DHCP server (usually in in most routers).  What this means is that the DNS-323 has a dynamically assigned IP not fixed.

I would also be tempted to remove the HDD that showed the amber light and check it with the manufacturer's tools.  You don't want to have a HDD that is ready to fail.
