networked HP 8450 will not install!
« on: April 04, 2012, 08:12:42 PM »

Just purchased a DIR-655 Rev B router, old Belkin F5D9230-4 Died. Home Network wired and wireless. 2 XP desktops wired (one thru DIR-655 and the other thru an Ethernet switch unit (not a router)), iPad II, 1 XP Laptop used mostly wireless but at times wired, 1 Windows 7 laptop wireless, plus HP Photosmart 8450 wired thru switch. ISP is Starband satellite.

All was working great until I replaced the Belkin with the D-Link. I have lost the HP-8450 and have tried until the cows came home but it WILL NOT install from HP software from any computer on the network.

I am knowledgeable about computers but not a tec. Point me in the right direction and I can fix it but right now I am lost as to what to do.

I use various forums to look for and to answer questions about the stuff I own, cars, trucks, model railroad, etc. so now I am adding to the list Routers!

Thanks

Ron

How is the HP connected Wired LAN or wireless?

Wow, didn't know Starband SAT was still going. I had them back in the early 2000s for a couple of years. What a nightmare.  ::)

If the printer is connected either wired or wireless it should be getting an IP address, then you just need to install the printer on each PC and tell it's Sw installation to connect to that certain IP address. I recommend Reserving the IP address that the printer is given ON the router using it's web page.

Thanks, It is on a wired connection. I may have other issues as I loaded an IP Address "fined" software this morning and it did not fined the printer either. Searched addresses was from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168.0.254. I also found that the address should be 192.168.2.2 so i shearched 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.254 and found nothing.

The HP 8450 can print directly from a SD card so I put one in with ethernet cable connected and the printer said "can not read card". Unpluged cable, put card back in, read it, selected picture and printed it!

Next thing to try I guess is to connect the printer to the USB port on the computer next to it rather than the network cable and see what happens.

Do network switches have IP addresses? Search found all of the computers and the new D-Link rounter but nothing for the switch that is in the network. One of the computers that is wired thru the switch was located in the search.

Murphy was an Optimist!

Thanks,

Ron

Need to set the Printers networking to automatically obtain an IP address from the router. Then it will pick up a 192.168.0.#

Most switches don't have IP addresses themselves. There just a bridge or connection pass thru to other devices.

Just to be clear on sitting the printers to automatically obtain an IP address from the router.  I do not remember seeing anything about this HP printer doing that in its install information. It may be there but does not inform you that that is what it is doing.

Or does your info refer to the router itself?

I would refer you to HPs support site or the Manual for this printer.

Most HP printers, if they have a LAN or WiFI connection, have networking properties on board the printer for setting up networking.

The belkin and the dlink most likely had different LAN IP schemes thats why you are not seeing the printer.  Power off the printer and make sure it is plugged into one of the LAN ports on the router.  Then power on the printer, go to the Routers Admin page and see if the printer has obtained an IP address form the 655.  If it has reserve that address so that it is always the same.

As for the Printer software itself, it most likely will be easier to uninstall it and reinstall it AFTER the printer has obtained an IP from the 655.

Another method would be to change the DIR-655 DHCP address scheme to match that of the belkin's.

Thanks for the help! I got everything back running late last night. Uninstalled ALL HP software, reset the HP 8450 to default settings, installed software, it could not find HP printer, looked up IP address on the printer's little screen, manually entered printer IP address, and BINGO everything started working together.

That printer is on the network in the kitchen/diningroom (wife's "office area"). I have a HP 3100 Photosmart that is connected to my computer via the USB. The DIR-655 is setting right next to the HP 3100 in my office (upstairs next to my HO Train setup). What steps do I need to do to move it to the DIR-655? And if I read things right that printer, if connected to the USB port on the DIR-655, will become a network printer also. Correct??!!

Again thanks for your help. I love these forums, you meet the kind of people who have "done it" and can point you in the right direction.

Glad you go it going.
Yes you can connect the other printer to the USB port however you'll need to use Shareport software on each PC you wish to connect to it.
