Router stopped working
« on: April 06, 2012, 10:08:02 AM »

I just had an issue where the router just stopped working:

- All wired pc's were unable to ping each other or access the internet
- Wireless also stopped working at the same time.
- Router did not respond to DHCP requests.
- Web interface of the router was unreachable.
- The power, LAN and WLAN lights on the router were still on.

I was not in the web interface making changes. A power off and on of the router resolved the issue, which lasted at least several minutes.

Hardware version: A01
Firmware version: 1.01

Some additional information.

I of course don't know if it is related, but about 15 minutes before the incident wireless was enabled on the router using the scheduling functionality of the router. A wireless device successfully connected to the router a few minutes laster.

Scheduled starting/stopping of wiresless was working without problems for about 5 days now since the last scheduled reboot of the router.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the 4500 gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. Or set the QoS for manual and set the up and download links to match your ISP speeds you pay for. Don't use weighted.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.

Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.

QoS was never enabled. I dont' see Advanced DNS services on my router. DNS relay has now been disabled.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

Done.

Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

Channel width was set to 20 MHz only.
Channel has been set manually now.

What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Yes I would set up for single mode G and test this out.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
I don't see any newer or beta FW for your unit for your region at this time.

Let us know how single mode works out

Yes I would set up for single mode G and test this out.

I switched to G only and will test it.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.

There are about 13 other wifi routers present, but I am the only one using channel 13 at the moment.

Do you think it is possible that something going wrong in the wireless part of the router can freeze the whole router?

If you have 13 other WiFi routers near by, this is probably a cause of the issues your seeing. Are they all on 2.4Ghz? Your area is probably experiencing WiFi congestion on 2.4Ghz.

Yes, all 2.4 GHz. Only one of those routers also has 5 GHz enabled.

Whats the chance of you testing or getting a 5ghz supporting router and testing your PC with 5Ghz wifi USB adatpers? I bet your problems would go away if you moved from 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz.

Not an option. I already did a test with a 5 GHz router before I bought the DIR-645 and found out that the range I got was not good enough for some parts of the house.

Well only other think you can try is to lower the power output of the WiFi from High to Medium and see if this might help. This will lower the radio foot print and maybe help with the interferences your experiencing.

Try to find a open channel and set it up manual for that channel thats not being used.

I would try 5Ghz and also get a 5Ghz AP or extender in parts of the house that you need WiFi on using 5Ghz.

Your problems are going to probably continue while using 2.4Ghz and all the neighboring 2.4Ghz radios around you.

Good luck.

Hi,

I have a similar problem with my DIR-645. I also use scheduling for wifi. Every couple of days the router will not activate wifi as it is supposed to and sometimes wired devices do not have internet access any more. After reboot everything is ok again. Unfortunately, I loose all log entries because of the reboot.

I start to believe that scheduling is buggy on this device. There is another thread reporting similar problems: http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=45699.0

I will disable scheduling completely and see if the problem still occurs. To me it looks like a bug. Is there any place to open a ticket with dlink?

Any router log indication of loosing or re-establishing connection with isp modem during this time frame?
Does ISP offer any log viewing abilities?
Is the ISP cable line a dedicated internet line or does it also provide television services?
If so, make sure there aren't any TV line splitters on the cable line. These will lower the signal going into the cable modem. If you need too, use a One good quality one.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.
