Where is EXT3 ?
« on: March 26, 2009, 07:11:32 AM »

I install my fist hard drive (Seagate 1TB) with Firmware version 1.00. I think, after I upgrade unit to firmware version 1.01 my hard drive must be reformatted or converted to EXT3. No, nothing like this. I install 2nd hard drive (WD 1TB) with firmware 1.01 - same file system EXT2. Yesterday at about 3am, I update firmware to 1.02b5(before I update firmware I save all my data) and no luck. File system EXT2 !
Did 1TB do not big enough to use EXT3 ? How unit chose file system to use EXT2 or EXT3 ?
No sign in setting to chose file system or convert from EXT2 to EXT3, and, why EXT3? Why not EXT4 with on-line defragmentation tools and with fixed bugs in transaction logging and file system recovery (see WIKI).
I think unit is powerfull enough  to handle EXT4 and many users will use EXT4(and feel safe) whan all this new P2P clients.

From WIKI
The ext4 or fourth extended filesystem is a journaling file system developed as the successor to ext3. It was born as a series of backward compatible extensions to add to ext3 64-bit storage limits and other performance improvements.[1] However, other Linux kernel developers opposed accepting extensions to ext3 for stability reasons,[2] and proposed to fork the source code of ext3, rename it as ext4, and do all the development there, without affecting the current ext3 users. This proposal was accepted, and on June 28, 2006 Theodore Ts'o, the ext3 maintainer, announced the new plan of development for ext4.[3] A preliminary development snapshot of ext4 was included in version 2.6.19 of the Linux kernel. On Oct 11, 2008, the patches that mark ext4 as stable code were merged in the Linux 2.6.28 source code repositories,[4] denoting the end of the development phase and recommending ext4 adoption. Kernel 2.6.28, containing the ext4 filesystem, was finally released on December 25, 2008.[5]

This device uses EXT2 solely, that was a product development decision undertaken a long time ago.  We don't have any answers for you as to why.

As for EXT4, it was not stable (and possibly not even available, I would have to check dates) when this product was released.  It could very well be supported in future firmware versions, however I personally doubt it.  Even with its new stable designation EXT4 is a fledgling FS.

I am personally only to the point of toying with the thought of building a machine to do some personalized comparisons, and compared to production technology I am bleeding edge.

Beta Firmware 1.02 Build 5 Release Notes
« on: March 20, 2009, 05:28:57 PM »
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
v1.02
9. Support EXT3.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I understand.. Better to make people back up data before the firmware update, but some times it is impossible due to high volume of data. But at the same time it mean that information about firmware update is misleading (http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=2430&question=DNS-323%20/%20DNS-321%20/%20DNS-343) and probably related only to DNS-323 and some early updates (see http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=3306#106 for full story)  with EXT3 on it first added, when removed. File system is not affected by update.

If I said something along the lines if this isn't my product, I was just trying to help out with the information at my disposal, would you take pity on my soul?

In all seriousness, I have not a blaspheming clue.

I just asking, and do not want blame anybody for anything, or ask why this and why that... I get this unit for $100, so I don't even try to get from this unit value for a $1000(which seems like what other people try to do). So far I just want to figure out how safe this combination: UNIX-EXT2-1TB drive. I hade bad experience with Seagate hard drives. I hade 5 of them. And after all, all 5 are dead. I manage restore my data from 4 of them using recovery program for NTFS file system . 1 is died due firmware bug (1TB 7200.11 Drive) and Seagate send me refurbished with same version of bugged firmware (eh, it is FUNNY!), so I update this drive buy myself. So far I love DNS-321, especially new 1.02b5 version. For EXT2, if something going wrong I must install Linux and try to restore data on Linux box. Did Linux have some tools to restore data from dying hard drive? I simple do not know, I just hope it does. Because fsck is not designed to do this(I personally hate to run this tool, because it mean you are in trouble. No, I do not like it…, not on Russian clone of PDP-11, not on new Core Duo Linux box).

P.S. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fsck
"F-suck" (associated with how long it takes to run)"   - Oh, YES !!! It is true.
P.P.S Fountain Valley, California !!!
Sweet California. San Diego. The place I wanna be.

I don't see how it could be impossible to backup your data.  It may be expensive to backup
your data, but if you can create the data,... then you can backup it up.

In order to backup 2TB of data, you must have another 2TB of free space. We are not talking about CRITICAL BUSINESS APPLICATION(DNS-321 is not for this), we are talking about home video and pictures, some projects, movies and other staff. Did you want to lose it ? NO. So lets open some company and lease drives to the peoples who want upgrade firmware in DNS. I personally buy 2nd DNS-321, and 2 more WD Caviar Black only to keep copy of another 2TB. Yes, $300 more, but no complains were is my pictures and music.

I absolutely agree with fordem. YES, people sometimes forget - both drives in one box, one controller, one system. Backup :-)

About backup, fire and BANK IN MY COUNTRY.
There is 2 HP Servers and disk array, both of servers and array have size like a fridge on you kitchen. And on top of all this big sign: "IN CASE OF FIRE TAKE IT FIRST". And more, almost forget, it is impossible to take out this computers, because of STEEL DOOR about half inch thick. Half of this door is actually attached to doors frame by big bolts and nuts, possibly to prevent anyone to take anythin big and valuable from this room.

The value of your data should be directly proportional to your budget for safeguarding it.  nuff said.

My budget in not limited by my wife anymore :-).
Actually my ex-wife, so MILITARY BUDGET IS MUCH BIGGER NOW !

2x DNS-321 both 2x1TB Drive + 1TB Drive in computer.

To FATMAN: Where you get -4 in rating ?

They won't tell me, apparently they are afraid I would pick fights.

In all seriousness though, I am surprised I don't have a higher negative rating.  I am known for my vitriol.  Or perhaps most people don't see the smite button as promptly as the applaud button.
