Hiding Guest Zone SSID
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:32:38 AM »

Is there anyway to make the guest zone SSID hidden?  I want to setup a guest zone for friends and roommates but I don't want to broadcast the SSID but I don't see an option for doing that (firmware 1.21).

I don't believe you can. It may hid both when you enable hidden wireless however. I'm not sure.

What's the essence of a 'guest zone' if you want to hide it? If you give some guest the SSID you might just as well disable MAC filtering and give the guest the WPA key together with the SSID. Accessing other PC's on the LAN is impossible if they don't have the login credentials and a big advantage: you can QoS the IP.

Hi Eddie, I intend to setup a guest zone with WPA encryption and only give out the SSID and WPA key to my roommates.  I am trying be the only one in the host zone because I don't even want people other than myself to see know what is on my network.  And I am pretty sure some day some how the SSID and WPA key will be known to people I don't even know if I give them out to my roommates.  I guess I can reuse my old Linksys 11g router to setup another WAN and let my roommates stick with 11g.  ;D

Forgive my newbie question, how do I setup the two routers so that they create two totally separate LAN but share the same broadband connection?

Just let them use the guest, what difference does it make if it's hidden? Please don't say it's more secure cause it ISN'T. Hidden ssid is not a security measure. Anyone that can crack even the weakest of encryption knows how to scan for a hidden SSID.

Lycan, I guess you are right.  If someone is capable of breaking in, it really doesn't matter if the SSID is hidden or not.  Sad reality.
