New Xbox slim and now constant Internet problems
« on: June 06, 2012, 03:44:47 PM »

Hey guys.

I bought a new x box slim after my Xbox elite took a dive. My old x box worked with the router straight out of the box just like the Xbox comparability site states. Well I got my new x box slim and now it's a joke. All the settings are default out of the box. The firmware is 135n.a. The box recognizes the router and sometimes doesent but has never connected and had full functionality. I'm lost I've tried dmz, reservation lists , everything. It seems as though it's the xbox but I can't figure out. I'm not very tech savy, in that I can follow directions buts that's it.

I really am at a loss, Im debating buying a new router but I know that this router is plenty capable. Can someone spend the time to get connected from square one? I'll provide a phone number. Hell I'll even pay for the support. I really am desperate.....

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks, Jason in CA

Welcome!

Are you wired or wireless connected to the router with the slim?

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Hmmm, ya, have seen some issue with those modems. If you don't have any VoIP via this modem and just using it for internet access, I would recommend check with your ISP to see if you can get your own modem and hightly recommend Motorola's SB 6 Series cable modems. Great modems.

I believe we do have some telephone running through it... :(

I will make the changes u recommend and see where I am at. Those are the only ones I should try from the default correct?

What changes should be on the x box side? Should
I leave it all on automatic?

Might see if the ISP modem has a built in router or not. If so, might need to see if there is a DMZ option on the modem.

Setup reserved IP addresses ON the router and set the xbox for automatic.

Even though I reserved an ip. If i leave auto on the Xbox it detects and logs a diff ip then the one reserved. Should I manually insert the info?

Update... Manually inserted the reserved ip info etc but left the dns on auto. And it connected....

The problem is. Once I shut it down and back on I have to retest to get it to connect...?

Ok second update.....

Tried to actually play despite the test showing passed connection wise and it wouldn't connect to live once the game was inserted.....

Backed back out and manually inserted the primary dns and it was successfully. Connecting seemed fast and the live loadup was instantaneous. I played a game for trial and error
And it was fine.

The real test will be when I get home and turn it back on after being off for a while, (that's where the real trouble has been)

For info fury, your initial advice and changes seemed to eliminate the constant  visibility problems. Hopelly when I get home it fires up without having to retest etc.....

Is your xbox wired or wireless? I would test both connections to see.

I would also review the Gaming, QoS and Gamefuel sticky for XBL in the FAQ Library.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

It is wireless...

Final update.

Everything is perfect, made the changes that fuzzy stated earlier in the post but set the Xbox settings to manual and put everything in myself because for some reason the reserved IP was not being acquired on the x box side.

2 days of perfect instantaneous connection at startup.... :)

Thanks again fuzzy
