Does anyone know if the DNS-343 will support the use of SATA III drives?  After looking through the 2GB drives on the support list, I have found them all to be either unavailable, or much more expensive than the current crop of 2GB drives.  I am considering the following drive and wanted to know if it was worth the risk to try it: 

Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 2TB Serial ATA Hard Drive - 2TB, 7200RPM, 64MB, SATA 6Gb/s

I just bought 4 of those drive for my 343 and set it up as raid 5. So far it works great. I am using firmware version 1.05.

Please post back a month from now and let us know how the RAID-5 is performing with these new HDDs

I did not have any problems setting up the raid 5 (ext2). When I starting using the first time drive #4 went out. I thought the drive went bad so I got another one. Since I only transferred 300GB of data on it I decided to start over and rebuild the raid 5 (ext2) and format the drives over again.

And again when I started transferring the files drive #4 failed. I restarted the 343 a few time and it still says #4 has failed. So this time I took the drive out and tested it with the seagate's Sea Tool and it does not see anything wrong with the drive.

So I just plugged the drive back in to the NAS and I am rebuilding the raid 5 (ext2) as I am writing this. So I am not sure if its my NAS or hard drive. I will give you an update later today!!!

Okay... i have given up!!! Either I did something wrong orthese drive does not work with the 343. I tried  rebuilding the drives to a raid 5 (ext 3). I was able to format the drive but soon after drive #2 failed. And once again I tested the hard drive on a different computer and tested it with the seagate tool and it passed. I need to try to get some other hard drives to make sure it is not the 343 nas that is defective.

I returned the Segate Hard Drives ( Barracuda ST2000DM001) and bought these drives instead:

4 - Hitachi CoolSpin 2TB Serial ATA/600 5400RPM 32MB Buffer Internal Hard Drive - OS03222

I setup them up as Raid 5 (EXT2). I did notice the transfer speed is a little slower than the Seagate, but that would be expected.

So far, six hours later 200GB of files transferred over and no failed or degrading hard drive problems like before. It will take me a while to transfer all the files from my 323 NAS but when I am done I will have transferred over 1TB of files to the 343.

Thanks for the updates. I hope your setup is finally settled down and stabilized.

I have successfully transferred 1TB of videos to the 343 NAS (raid 5 - EXT 2) and all drives and raid configuration are stable. So the 4 - Hitachi CoolSpin 2TB Serial ATA/600 5400RPM 32MB Buffer Internal Hard Drive - OS03222 work pefectly with the 343 NAS with FW 1.05

Other than the slower transfer speeds I really like that fact that these Hitachi HD have a 3 year warranty, where as the Seagate Barracuda only has 1. Only time will tell if these drives are any good in the log run. One last thing, these drives are a lot quieter and runs cooler than the seagate. I think the 5400 rpm Hitiachi verse the 7200 rpm Seagate might be the reason for that.
