Can I use the USB port to move files into the 325 from a computer's USB port?

All of the literature seems to suggest that the USB port is only for a secondary device, and not a primary device.

The NAS interface seems to be hopelessly slow when compared to what could be possible by using a direct-connection via a USB port.

So what you are basically saying is that USB 2.0 should be faster than Gigabit-Ethernet for bulk file transfer?

I appreciate your input and I suppose I asked for that answer by not mentioning that I do not have a gigabit ethernet setup.  Additionally, converting my whole network to gigabit would not be cost-effective; I am trying to back up files, not upgrade an entire network...

Going back to the original question, does anyone have a useful answer about the USB issue?

As DNS does have a USB-drive copy facility the easiest would be using a external drive. Downside of course being double work.

But as USB-to-PChost connection is by definition a point-2-point one, I was implying that a simple CAT5 wire between DNS and your host would achieve the same end result, just with gigabit speed.

AFAIK, the DNS-325 does not map the USB drive to a network drive (under windows). It allows only to backup the usb drive content to the NAS. Right ?

Yes, correct; my goal was to push a massive amount of data into the unit via USB at this initial point where large volumes of data need to be moved into the 325; once things have been "backed up" (so to speak) into the RAID, then there will be little need to move so much data around and the USB issue no longer presents a problem...   ...although the USB back-up feature has proven to be super convenient!!!

Also, side note.  (1000 = gigabit ethernet, 100 = NOT gigabit ethernet )
* my laptop is 1000
* my router is 100, not 1000.
* my switch is 100, not 1000.
* the 325 is 1000

Do any of you know whether or not I can get away with simply upgrading the switch to a 1000 capable unit in order to port high speed data transfer from the laptop wire into and out of the 325?

Well, as you say, the issue is just the initial full backup. I still don't see a reason why not just plug your laptop directly into NAS for this one-off happening, circumventing all other LAN infrastructure?
