Can't decide between the 825 or the 655
« on: June 30, 2012, 06:24:16 PM »

After many days of reviewing routers and this forum I had narrowed my search down to the above mentioned 2 routers. I guess my key question is are they essentially the same base router but with the 825 being dual band and does the 825 have better internals (circuitry). On the D-link site there is only a $10 price difference between the 2 and because of this I'm leaning towards the fact that the extra $10 is for the dual band.

The main reason for adding a router is I want the QoS for protecting my VOIP plus I want to take advantage of the N for when I use my laptops. Stability of connections is a key issue therefore willing to sacrifice range and/or pay a premium for this. My current modem is an old Siemens 6520 supplied by the phone company and want to upgrade it.
I like the idea of future proofing (dual Band) for streaming HD. As I live in the countryside I seem to have no issues with the 2.4 bandwidth. Had even ran inSSider and it had found no devices running on the 2.4. So for me it seems that I do not need the 5ghz bandwidth.

Hence the reason why I asked that except for the dual band is the 825 also a better working router than the 655?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

THe 825 and 655 are essentially the same HW. Just the 825 has a 5Ghz radio. If theres only a $10 difference then I would spring for the 825. I'm currently using it right now as my main router. Solid router. Great WiFi.

Even if you don't have 5Ghz supporting, you can turn this radio OFF until the day you get something that supports it.

If your looking for a good cable modem if your ISP is cable, I highly recommend Motorola SB 6120, 6121 or 6141 modems. Great modems and work well with DLink routers.

QoS is for maintaining good data bandwidths while multiple devices are online at the same time.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer. It had helped me a lot to make up my mind. I will spring for the 825 (future proofing) and do as you had suggested by turning the 5Ghz radio off until I need it.
Unfortunately I do not have cable modem but DSL as it is not available in my area. From what I had read I should be okay as I also have a Siemens 4200 for which I will bridge and use it with the 825.

Thanks again

Ok, just make sure the DSL modem is bridged and let the router handle the PPPoE and select Always ON.
Come back and visit if you need help.

Enjoy.
