I haven't touched my DIR-655 in years and reboot it every once and a while. I've changed service providers and they now offer IPv6 which I believe the DIR-655 Rev A2 doesn't support which is a requirement for a project I'm working on.
Q1. What D-Link model should I upgrade to as I have about 10 WiFi devices (Laptops, iPhones, iPads, Apple TV, etc.) if I want QoS, VOIP, Video streaming along with IPv6 support?
Any one of the new amplify routers will work for you. One thing to consider, are you using 5Ghz or does any of your devices support 5ghz WiFi? If so, then any of the DIR 8 series routers will handle this. Even the DIR-825. If you don't have any 5Ghz supporting devices, the the DIR 6 series will work well for you. The DIR 825 and 655 Rev B routers have IPv6 as all the newer Amplify routers.
I've tried to decipher the new D-Link models but can't figure out what the major differences are as their is not a good product comparison page. Most 8 series routers have 2.4 and 5Ghz WiFi. All DIR 6 series routers are only 2.4Ghz.
The D-Link Amplifi HD Media Router 3000 (DIR-857) looks to be a good choice but can't tell if its overkill or not. Thoughts? The DIR-857 is a great router. Holds a candle and surpasses on many things compared to other routers. I enjoy mine. However you don't have devices that support the 450Mb WiFi connections then you might miss out on that aspect however all speeds are still supported and work well under 450Mb.
Q2. I'll probably give my DIR-655 A2 to my mom so should I upgrade the FW to 1.21 or 1.35NA or just leave it at 1.11? I would set up the router at her place and make sure it works there. If it works well there and you don't see any problems. I would keep whats loaded until such a time it might warrant the upgrade.
