DI-824VUP settings for multi devise help
« on: July 23, 2012, 08:55:10 AM »

Don't know if this is the right support topic but could not find 1 for my inquiry. I seem to be having issue's of loosing my internet connection if 2 computers are logged on at the same time. Spoke to my internet provider and they said the my speed supports multi connections and it has to be a setting on the router ports? I am somewhat illit on this subject and do not want to open port's that might leave me vulnerable to an attack. I have a guest saying with me for a few weeks and am a bit concerned with him sharring the same port as well as loosing my connection when he logs on. Can anyone enlighten me on what setting I need to configer?and or if this is causing my issue's.

Oh, I also have Vonage connected to port 1, ports 2-3 for puter connections

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking?
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall if you have this option.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure.

Geeeze after answering all your questions it timed out and I lost everything. OK will try to condense it.  This router was previousely configured at another location and set up with the VPN to accomodate Camera's. No longer in use.

Stand alone - ARRIS TM602G
Devise info - Wan: There is a Mac address
                           Connection DHCP connected
IP is correct and same for Gateway
Sub mask: 255.255.(don't want to display)
Domain server: appears to also be correct
DMZ is disabled:

Nothing is filled in under Firewall Rules but setting previous set shows is as follows

Have you done a factory reset of the 824?

One thing about your Arris modem, it may have a built in router already.
To tell, look at the 825 web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section? if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN or Internet IP address field, then the modem has not giving you a public IP address and is private.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ. Its preferred to get a public IP address on the 824 if your choose to use an external router. The Arris mode is supposed to have a web page at 192.168.100.1.

Do you have phone service with this modem?

From the home page under Wan settings it's set for Dynamic IP address but non of the fields are filled in, auto is disabled though.
From status- Devise info: ONLY under LAN IP is 192.168.0.1
Wan IP is an assianed # as well as a domain
                                                      Name server
Yes, when I reinstalled it at this location and entered new pass words & encryption
Yes, TW has phone connected to the modem as well as I have Vonage connected to the router for a different phone #.

Will have to think about it :-\ I have a sensitively configured puter, and found most techies haven't a clue to what they are doing, they only read a support screen that is usually generic and not specific to the issue, than like to try this then try that and see what happens.

Didn't say U were :o But the site U suggested isn't U. My puter was made for vista I had to add a new hardrive and split it to except XP Pro so many of my drivers & configuartions are borrowed from other models than my own. So what would assumingly seem simple on most puters is not on mine and any changes can mess up something else. Been there done that and it's a lot of work to get it corrected. I can't seem to find the D-Link manual or I wouldn't be as lost with these setting Nor do I feel like spending a few hundred for tech support while they run the clock on something that is probably a simple setting. Even when the router was new and under warrenty can't tell you how many hours I spent with D-Link tech support who haden't a clue how to configure this router. Anyway thanks for U'r help I realize without you seeing what is actually showing it's next to imposible to help, but I thought I would try.

THe help I an suggesting is having a look at your router settings only. Nothing on the PC at all. I'd like to see if getting your ISP modem in to bridge mode or seeing if we might be able to use the DMZ option on the ISP modem, if there is this option, maybe we can get the router working better for you.

I'm confused, Do you work for that site? and if so U wouldn't be the tech I would get if I choose to pay for support and if I wanted to pay for support I have plenty of options, D-Link, Dell, Cable Provider and a push Staples,BB tech geeks, Besides people use forums for Free support on basic config which is what I was inquiring about.

Glad you found the fix.

And NO, I don't work for DLink or Teamviewer. Teamviewer is a free tool we use to help in-experienced users here in the forums set up there routers.

Enjoy.
