DIR-655, Net frequently goes in and out
« on: August 07, 2012, 01:33:11 PM »

Hello all, first time posting here. I have been having trouble with my net for sometime now, TWC (time warner cable) guy came to my house to investigate it, said nothing was wrong with the modem but was in fact the doing of the router.

I asked him to take a look at it but he stated he was not allowed to and would not take a look. The main problem is that it mostly goes down when were gaming the net will randomly shut off, sometimes it comes right back, but usually we have to restart the whole thing in order to get net back. It has been known to go off even while were just searching the web.

I am not to techy, but if you tell me what you need to help diagnose this problem I should be able to get said information. So far from what I have seen browsing the forums looking for something like my issue the main info i can provide is..

Net speed - 20meg down   2 up

Router - D-Link Xtreme Gigabit Router (DIR-655) Wireless N300, USB SharePort, Gigabit

Hardware version - A4

Firmware version - 1.35A

Some of my configuration is I have shut off the wireless portion to turn it into a wired router, (it was still doing this while is was wireless i just shut off the wireless portion today), I also turned mac address filtering on and add the 3 pc's to the mac address and give out the internet that way.

The way its hooked up is cable line/modem/router/then pc1/ pc2/ pc3 connect into router.
Only pc 1 and pc 2 use it for gaming. pc3 is just for web surfing.

Preemptive thanks to anyone who helps with this, im just tired of it and want to fix it. It really sucks to be playing a game and be doing well or on the verge of a comeback to then have your game freeze because you lost net and then ruined the game for the rest of your team. I'm just tired of dealing with it.

Link>Welcome!

What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options just to test. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I would review this for your gaming needs:
Gaming and Gamefuel for XBL.
You may need to set up QoS rules if your gaming and others are online doing something as well. This is for XBL however you'll notice there is PCs included as well for example.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Modem is stand alone, its the one TWC has given us.

Modem make is Cisco, Model number 2100. And we don't really use XBL, just PC gaming.

Also what is multicast streaming? Its not enabled right now, I looked it but tbh, when I was reading it, it just wasn't clicking with me and I'm confused by it.

Check out the stick and see if that will help. I think you need to put your gaming PC into one rule and give it a priority, start with 1 or 10, then make a rule for the other PCs and give a lower priority, say 100.

I also check the routers logs for any disconnections or re-connections during the times you see this disconnect problem.

Keep us posted.

ok which one of the links do you want me to review because you posted a few of them, and I just want to be sure, also making a rule? You may as well have said to me in japanese because you lost me their, I've never heard of doing that let alone on how to do it. and the thing that worried me about doing it is if in following a guide and something pops up on my end that isn't in the guide, ill just be stuck and lost because I wont know what to do.

OK since my last post, the internet has gone down  6 more times.

The avg length of time is 5-6min downtime before coming back up on its own.

The time log I have is (I am missing 2 times stamps because I got lazy didn't write them down.)

8/7/12 11:23pm(goes out) - 11:30pm(comes back)
8/8/12 8:08am(goes out) - 8:14am(comes back)
8/8/12 4:24pm(goes out) - 4:30pm(comes back)
8/8/12 4:53pm(goes out) - 5:00pm(comes back)

Now when it goes out, all lights are on except the sending and receiving on the modem. I have also notice that the PC light on the modem is flashing while the net is down as well.

So you say that the sending and receiving lights on the ISP modem are out when you notice there is a disconnection? If this is the case then your ISP service and ISP modem needs to be looked at. If your on Cable, I would have the ISP tech check signal levels and modem logs during this time frame to see if they notice anything on there side for the times you mentioned. Also make sure if t.v. line splitters are on the line, remove them or if you have to use one, use ONE good quality one so that the signal going into the ISP modem is good. Ask your ISP if there is an upgrade for this modem or if your interested, do they support having your own modem, if so, I highly recommend getting a Motorola SB 6121 or 41 cable modem, VERY GOOD. However you need to get the ISP to check signal and cable lines going to the ISP modem. If your ISP modem is not connected Send and RCV then the problem lies with the ISP modem to the ISP service.

If the PC light is on and flashing on the ISP Modem, this means it's still communicating with the 655 router and the router is trying to establish a connection which the ISP modem is no longer providing due to some interruption in service from the ISP side.

Well that's what I meant in my first post, the Technician from my ISP of Time Warner Cable, came out to the house and shortly after him leaving is when i made my post here.

He checked the fittings and the splitters, and ran all the diagnostics, and said that their wasn't any problem he was detecting, and I was telling him what I had almost everything I've told you, he said he couldn't make the connection any better then it was as that point. When I told him which lights were going in and out when the net was out, same as i just posted to you, he stated that the router was the issue because the router wasn't sending the signal properly.

Once having learned that, I got to this website, made account, posted and here we are.

How long have you had the 655 router and has it been working up to what point did the net seem to stop working?

I kind of highly doubt the router is sending an improper signal.
One test you can do, shut off the WiFi radio after everyone has gone to bed along with all other devices accept one PC. Game and test with this one PC. Does it still happen?

I would also go to the store that had a return or refund policy and test a different router and see. Or take this one to a friend or familys place and see if the problem follows. Need to test this router on a different modem and or ISP service to help determine if it's actually a router issue or ISP issue.

I bought the router back in 2009 from newegg, internet troubles have been going on for about 6-7months now.

I had shut off the WiFi completely when I was going the sticky you gave me, because we just used it as wired router anyway.

Testing another isp with this router is not possible at this time.

Seems like if it's been working week up to about 6-7 months ago, I still feel it's an ISP issue. I would try a new ISP Modem. You said that the ISP modem send and receive lights go out when this occurs. This means the ISP Modem as lost communication with the ISP service. The problem is most likely between the modem and the ISP.

I would factory reset the router and also swap out cables. CAT 6 is recommended.
