Volume 2 for RAID 1 config?
« on: August 09, 2012, 04:17:48 PM »

Hi I am newbie, very newbie, here are my dumb questions:
just bought dns-320 + 2 seagate 1T harddrives. Everything seems fine after setup, however I wonder if it is correct that I can only see Volume 1 as RAID 1, and size is 1T.
So where is the 2nd 1T drive, shouldn't it appear as Volume 2? From System Status-> Hard Drive Info, I do see two drives listed. I understand I only have actual 1T free space to use as the other one will mirror the actual one, how can I tell which one is used for mirroring?

Thanks!

You should read the manual- especially the section that explains the various RAID setups.

You will only ever see Volume_1 if you are using identical size disks in a RAID setup.

As far as you are concerned, data is written to both disks at the same time in your RAID 1 setup so please don't get the idea that this will act as backup in any shape or form.  All RAID does is make sure that if a disk fails you still have access to your data.

Over the years I have had the odd disk fail in a RAID array and those using it never noticed, not even when the array was rebuilt.  We also have a standard backup procedure in place so that if there is any physical damage to any of the equipment we can restore everything with the exception of the days work, and even that is recoverable from the local machines.

If you want to have one disk as a backup of the other then that is possible but it is not a RAID setup you want - again read the manual to find out about it - at least the manual I have has more than enough information should you want this option.
