H.264 and MKV

This poll has the intention on making dlink work on future support for H.264 and/or Matroska (.mkv) files

now 99% of the HD and m-HD content on the web is .mkv (h.264)

it is very difficult to find HD content on any other format...

i have a huge collection of movies in .mkv and have to re-encode all of them to xvid to be able to watch them through the DSM-510
EVERY HD movie you download WILL BE IN .MKV ....    so if you really want to make use of its HD capabilities you will have to re-encode the .mkv files with annother codec....


d-link should make this codec (h.264) and the container (.mkv) compatible with the DSM-510...   it would make the device perfect...   its the only thing it's missing

MKV and x264 files will play on the 510 NOW.........I'm using the brand new (latest version) of TVersity and I'm watching a .mkv file right now......it works great and clearly is a software issue as far as being able to watch .mkv HD files on the DSM-510.......Give it a whirl, works great for me.........WHY Dlink couldn't figure this out is beyond my comprehension..........

If you do not change your posts about MKV & H.264 & DSM-510, I'll report you to moderators as your posts looks like advertisement for TVersity all over the forum.

Please, try to understand that product you are pointing to IS NOT always the solution. What if I my customers want to watch MKV videos directly from some UPnP NAS device? Telling them they need to do conversion from MKV to VOB or to stream trough TVersity is not near good solution. They want (yes, they asked me for this) firmware with better support for MKV files.

Now, the below lines should be seen by D-Link sales managers:
You sent us price lists with promotion prices for DSM-510 in Adria region before 2 months I believe. You are underlining DSM-510 DivX support! Did you know that most (if not all of them) customers here watch DivX movies with subtitles. And how good is DivX subtitle support in DSM-510? The answer is one question: Could it bee worsen!?
Now, you could tell me that D-Link has more expensive devices with better support for subtitles. Yes, and I can tell you that PM for WD in my company has device which costs far less then DSM-510 on stock with far better support for DivX subs and (watch this) excellent MKV support! Of course, WDTV is not networked device - D-Link DSM-510 is networked device with no support for the MOST popular High Def format on the planet.

pmjobe I think is simply try to help to inform you of a way to play mkv video files on a device that does not support mkv natively. Tversity will trancode mkv files on the fly to allow playback on the DSM-510. The DSM-510 like the DSM-520 does not have a processor thats supports .h264 such as the DSM-750 does so using this media server is one way to playback mkv files you may have.

Ok, I understand - hardware limitations. That's official now.
CPU used in this box is EM8620L-LF. Checking documentation for this Sigma Design processor, it's clearly written that this CPU is not capable playing H.264. This is how you should answer, ECF ;)...

Now, can you tell us when will be added better subtitle support in DSM-510?

Please, is there any setting? I can't transcode mkv files with tversity!

Max.. No special settings. Gotta run 1.6 of TVersity. Keep in mind that the .mkv will be transcribed into .mpg. It will lose DolbyD & DTS but will play. You need a fairly hot CPU (I am running a duo processor 3.2 Ghz) and a wired connection to the the 510.  Stick with 720P. 1080P not really practical...

I also have a 750 and native .mkv is the way to go... ce

ok, maybe i have a Pentium IV 3.06 GHZ and so thre is not enough power to transcode?

Max.. That's plenty of speed.. Are you wired or wireless? I could not get the 510 to play the transcoded .mpg without being hard wired to the router.. ce
