QoS automatic uplink speed problem - DIR-835
« on: October 30, 2012, 08:45:26 PM »

Hello all,

I just got myself one DIR-835 A1 last week and I am pretty happy with it right now :)

8MB/s transfer from 5GHz to 2.4GHz, hehe (yeah, I am not used to this speed. My last wireless router was one DIR-615 C1)

My ISP is Primus DSL from Canada. I managed to bridge the Thomson modem they lent and now the router does the PPPoE.
Everything is running fine and dandy, but there is just one problem... The QoS engine is not measuring the upload speed.
When there is one reconnection or when I reboot the router, I get the page saying that it is being measured, but at the webpage the "Measured Uplink Speed" appears as "Not Estimated" :/
By my test my link is 1.5Mbps down and 330Kbps up (yeah, old phone cables, lots of interference)

I can presume that when the uplink speed is not estimated the QoS engine is not working, right?
When I was just DMZ'ing the router it used to measure the speed (in this case it gets its address from DHCP). That makes me believe that QoS automatic speed + PPPoE = not working

Anyone else has this problem? My firmware is 1.02.

Oh, and out of curiosity, anybody know what kind of QoS does Dlink use? Some custom one with lots of automatic priority classification or something like Codel?

What ISP speed are you supposed to get UP and DOWN that you pay for?

Is ALWAYS ON enabled in the PPPoE setup on the router?

What happens if you set a manual UP and DOWN Link speeds? This may not results in automatic detection.

I am supposed to get 7Mbps down and I think 800kbps up, but the modem is able to synchronize with the network at only 1834kbps down and 437kbps up (raw), if I am not mistaken (low speed cause by line attenuation).

Anyway, "Always On" is enabled on the PPPoE setup.

You mean up and down link on the QoS configuration?
There is not option for download speed, but there is the option for upload speed and it is set for automatic estimation.
The is no other option for manual download and upload configuration, at least I couldn't find another one.

You should make sure that your DSL phone line(s) are in good condition, wired correctly, filtered and has proper signal levels coming from the phone pole or box to the house and up and running to the ISP modem. We have seen some cases where the Phone lines that were not set up correctly caused various connection and stability issues. http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=9438.0

Take a look at this and see if you have these options:

I suffer no disconnection, so even tough my line is attenuated it is fairly stable. I think we can eliminate any possibility of my ISP being the cause.

My QoS is not anything like on those pictures, it is a lot simpler. Very similar to the one on the old DIR-615.

How interesting, I didn't see that on my 835. That does look like the normal DIR series QoS rules...

What happens if you choose to select the UP link from the drop down menu?

Ii just inserts the speed that I choose to the "Manual Uplink Speed".
Should I try downloading the 1.02 firmware again? My firmware date is "14 June 2012", and version 1.02.
If I tell the router to check online for update, it says that there is one 01.02 firmware available from 2012-7-2. I update from dlink website on the first day I got it, so I do not know how it was before that.

Often the release dates differ from what is displayed in the status.

I would do a factory reset, update, then factory reset once more then either use the wizard on the routers web page or manually set up the router.

Yeah, just compared their MD5SUMs and they are the same.

Would that make the QoS engine page change, or just to make the router able to automatically measure the uplink speed?

The funny thing is that my QoS engine menu and yours is different from the manual, hehe.
On Amazon one guy reviewed the DIR-835 (e38Bimmer) and it seems that his menu was just like yours.

I might think something with QoS and maybe the ISP modem is preventing automatic UP link detection. I know mined worked when I had it, and I'm on Cable using a Motorola SB 6180 modem. It was working however I personally use manual UPlink speed options. If your ISP speeds are known and always the same, then using manual speed settings is good.

Do you know the port speed the ISP modem supports? Some newer modems support 1000Mb connections. You can change the WAN port speed to a manual speed as well.

The modem is one Thomson TG585v7, I would guess that it support only 100Mbps ethernet speeds.
I will activate the On Demand connection to test further, if that do not work I will just use the manual uplink speed then.

Thanks :)

Suppose there isn't any other places to test this router out like a friend, family with a different modem? Might see if there any any sort of modem management going on internally if you can access the modem. I'll check on the specs of this modem tomorrow.

I've been only 2 months on this city, so no friends where I can test yet :/
I have (almost) full access to the modem, even telnet.
It uses one of those TR-59 management packets or something that auto-configures everything. Luckily this function was disabled when I switched to bridge mode.

Maybe someone else can test PPPoE + automatic uplink measurement, even with other models? My DIR-835 measured correctly the speed when connected with DHCP.

I am not sure, but I think that the DIR-615 also had this problem with PPPoE. It has been more than 2 years since the last time that I used that router with PPPoE, so I do not remember

Possible that measurement my not work when using PPPoE.

Well I think for now, just set a manual uplink speed. I usually set it for 1Mb over what your actual limit is so the router has some over head to work with. I think you'll be ok with this.

Is this your ISP modem? tg585

I might ask your ISP if there is a newer or more recent modem available. I see that you put v7 on so I'm not sure how old that is or how recent. I might ask your ISP if they have a MODEM only unit. If not, have them make sure the Modem is bridged correctly.

One thing you could try later on, unbridge the ISP Modem, Switch back to DHCP on the 835, input the WAN IP address the 835 gets from the ISP Modem and put that into the DMZ on the ISP modem, then see if you get automatic measurements.
