DIR-835 - wireless stops working with some clients
« on: November 11, 2012, 08:27:31 AM »

Hello, yesterday I just did one lan party here at my home and had a very annoying problem that took me some time to workaround albeit my solution was not ideal.

There were 6 computers on the 2.4GHz band, and 2 on the 5GHz.
Everytime the people on the 2.4GHz band would get disconnected for no reason, but this router should be able to handle that number easily. After lots of fiddling, like telling people to shut down their phones WiFi, I finally found the culprit:
N and G mixed mode

Even with only Wireless-N devices there would be problems. N-only mode worked well.
That is unpractical for me as there are some devices here that are still on Wireless-G, like game consoles and some phones.
Sadly I did not test G-only mode, but that would be too slow.

My old DIR-615 could handle more than that on mixed-NG with no problems

PS.: I only use 20MHz on 2.4GHz.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.

Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only and has the best performance.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I also highly recommend gaming over a wired connection. I've personally haven't had that many gaming over wireless, At most I think some uses have done 2 or 3 devices.

One thing you should check out and maybe use is the 645/835 Gaming and Gamefule settings for XBL if your using any online services in the FAQ Library.

Keep us posted.

My router is one DIR-835 A1, with firmware 1.02.

My ISP is Primus Canada, DSL.
The modem is with built in router, but it is bridged right now. Thompson TG585v7.

I set the wireless channel manuallyto 1 (it was on 1 already, but automatically) and was still having problems.
I only use 20MHz channels and WPA2-Personal with AES.
WLAN Partition is already off. WMM is forced on.

But I just noticed that changing Short GI to disabled and saving does nothing, when I go back to its page it is enabled again. Anybody can reproduce?

WPS is always disabled.

The lan party was for playing Age of Myhology, but the problem was that the router couldn't sustain 6 simultaneos clients, those clients couldn't even authenticate with the router.
It worked fine on 802.11n mode only, but on mixed-NG it did not (even though there were no G clients connected)

On Auto it stops working with 2 wireless-N clients when just one wireless-G client connects.
On 20MHz it works with up to 6 wireless clients, be them N or G.
My router is always set for 20MHz-only on 2.4GHz, as I want it to be neighbor friendly.

I have a hunch that the problem is the "Short GI" that I am unable to disable :/

According to my router the firmware 1.03 is up, but I can't see it on the website.
What was changed?

Can't find it on any site either. Not sure whats changed.

I would go ahead and load it. You can always downgrade if something happens.
I recommend following this:
FW Update Process
Where it says you need to download the zip file from the main web site, just replace that step with using the routers web page. Please do a factory reset both before and after the udpate. Then configure from scratch using the web page.
Please use IE for FW upgrade. Try using FF when configuring after.

http://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DIR-835/Firmware/DIR835A1_FW_ReleaseNote.txt

It seems that not much was changed, but will update anyway when I get home.

Odd that it hasn't posted officially to the mains yet. I suppose. Not sure if that info is the same for NA units or not.

If the router says theres new FW, then give it a go and let us know.

Got home, connected the cable and... the ports are now fried. Maybe D-Link forgot to put some circuitry to prevent short circuit or something when connecting any cable. I can access the router through wireless but now the WAN and the LAN ports are dead.
The port on my computer still works, also on my modem.

Good thing that I bought it less than 30 days ago.

Was this after for before trying the FW update?

Power OFF the 835 for 30 sec. leaving it unplugged. Power OFF the PC that you were using to wire connect.

Try a factory reset.

Does anything recover? I had one of these and didn't see these issues. Only thing that might fry the LAN is improper connections or maybe a mis configuration in the network cards management options on the PC. Or a bad cable.

It was before trying the FW upgrade. I left it and my computer resting for 5 minutes but did not work.
Tried a factory reset, the SSID got back to "dlink" and "dlink_media". I could connect to it wirelessly, but couldn't access the web interface.
Pluged in the cable, did not work.

I just exchanged it for another unity, will test it for some time now.

Keep us posted. Use IE or FF when configuring the router.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

I would contact level 2 support and ask about this. I think I remember seeing this on my 835 when I had it. I can't remember if I was able to turn it OFF or not. I'm wondering if there is a setting that is dependent upon being switched to be able to get Short GI to be disabled.
Are the wired LAN ports working now?

Let us know if you want someone to review the router settings with you.
