maximum jumbo frame size in 1.07

hi, i just read about 10 posts about jumbo frames but don't see a clear answer as to what the maximum (or optimal) size is?

my Netgear GS716T can support up to 10240, has anyone ever tried setting it that high before? if so did it work as advertised? it appears that my vista box can only support 4088 or 9014, but the W2K8 server can only support up to 7k MTU.

i assume that would mean that i would want to set vista to 4088 and 2k8 to 4k so they align? if the answer to this is yes, then where do i modify on the 323? a review of the manual yielded no information.

you can set jumbo frames in the SETUP>>LAN under JUMBO FRAME SETTINGS: options are 3000,4000,5000,6000,7000,8000,9000.

some home routers can only do 4000, most switches can do 9000.

It is best to use the highest, however it's up to what your network can do. In my case 9000 worked the best for me and yielded the best preference.

thanks for info zardoz.

i just spent the last few days reconfiguring my network to get ready for this. i have my 2 servers set at 9k, and the Retrospect box set at 7k. my switch supports over 10k, so that is a non issue.

i'm planning on using 9k when it gets here.

Both my PC (HP TX2z) and DNS-323 support 9k jumbo frames, but for some reason 4k frames works best. I'm running cat6 cable. Any ideas why I get better speeds with 4k jumbo frames over 9k?

I'm using a DIR-655 router. Do I have to configure anything on the router?

The best frame size for a particular network will typically need to be determined by trial & error - the equipment being used, and the nature of the files both play a part, and yes, your router may be the reason that 4000 bytes works best for you.

Check the router manual - what is the maximum frame size it supports and does it need to be configured.

Yeah, apparently my router, Dlink DIR-655 can only do a maximum of 4k Jumbo frames.

From the WAN side the jumbo size is 4K.
From the LAN side the jumbo size is 9K.

I'm running 9K with a DIR-655 on FW 1.31 (beta), connected to a DGS-2208, connected to a DNS-323. Not seeing any frame fragmentation or anything out of the ordinary.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a cable or DSL modem that would support more than 4K over the internet.

Interesting, so maybe I should enable 9K on my PC/DNS-323
