Firmware Wishlist - You are joking, right?
« on: November 27, 2012, 03:42:45 AM »

I am an owner of two DNS-320.

They've both been working perfectly for almost 2 years now.

However... I have to say that the firmware wishlist is a joke. All the changes firmware 2.x made were to support newer software or hardware so it would keep working. Not bad but keeping a firmware wishlist is just a way to keep the users entertained.

If even the most basic features like WOL are left behind, why should we keep adding to a dream list?

"I wish my NAS could make coffee!" Is a wish that will have the same study as all others: none.

So... it is clear that DLink's position is to keep firmware updates on 'old' products to just the strictly necessary but at least be honest to your users and remove the firmware wishlist post.

Regards,
mike

Have to agree with you on this one especially after learning that the product status for this model (Revision A) has already Phased Out on September 1, 2012!!!

Kinda made sense that firmware 2.03 was released shortly after the phase out
Phase out Sep 1, 2012
Firmware 2.03 released Sept 19, 2012

I guess they just wrapped up whatever work they were doing and released it.

Looks like there are going to be no more firmware updates at this point.

Actually it's not true, firmware version 2.03 aka 2.03b03 came out back in June 18, 2012.

As a matter of fact, I saw version 2.04b01 in one of D-Link FTP site.

You're right, found him on Hungarian D-Link.
But the filename is strange, I would hesitate trying and flashing it right away.

@mv_cz, do not list URL link to "unofficial" firmware release as it's prohibited here. Refer to link - Firmware Do's and Don'ts.

I'm sorry, didn't know that it could be considered unofficial (I thought if it is on dlink ftp, site then it is regular beta). Modified my post above ;-)

You're both right. The site is the D-Link Hungary FTP site, which is an official D-Link repository. However, only DNS-320 owners who purchased their unit in that region should consider installing the firmware. Also disconcerting is the fact that the file lacks a change log. That said, we don't sanction the posting of links from other regions due to confusion it may cause with the North America customer base.

Java: A suggestion here. Please ask the dev team to consider releasing the DNS-320 firmware source codes as open source. I think there are many external  developers who are also 320 users here who are willing to get their hands dirty to enhance the function of this product further even though its now EOL.

That's a request that dates back to the legacy DNS-323 and DNS-321 models.  :(

Actually GPL source code is readily available for many of D-Link products with the exception of internal developed applications. But don't expect to see source code for the latest firmware release and getting it compiled successfully is another issue.

For DNS-320, version 1.0 and 2.02 is available in Taiwan site.

Oh really? Haha, if you look at the android scene for example, CM has made leaps and bounds by adapting and fine-tuning google's original android codes. In a way that provided a lot of interests to the community especially in getting some useful but missing features up.

Code will always have bugs and we can accept it. If D-Link does not have the resource to maintain it, I'm sure the public domain do, at the very least the community can help out.

From a corporate point of view I do understand the reluctance from DLink side to provide visibility to the codes (DLink is reluctant to explain their firmware release lifecycle), but opening it to the public do have its benefit.

From the users point of view, at least we know that we are not left stranded :(.

Thank God that 2.03 was released before it went EOL, otherwise it'll be a black elephant lying in the corner of a room unplugged due to whatever files we copied into just get shredded to zero bytes.

I have yet to look at the product that supersedes the 320, but I do hope the USB port is now at the back rather than the front!

DNS-320 - Firmware Do's and Don'ts

Actually, I just got my DNS-320 today, and since I'm Hungarian I tried the firmware. Everything runs okay this far, but I haven't noticed any changes to 2.03.

Unfortunately, the Hungarian FW was not accompanied by a change log.

Thanks for the info, actually I'm from the same region - Central Europe. So I'll try it and see :-)
