dlna server doesn't show files on samsung smart tv
« on: December 01, 2012, 04:24:41 PM »

I just bought a Samsung smart tv.  I mainly went with the smart tv so I can watch netflix and the movies on my nas, which is a dns-320 with two mirror 2 terabyte drives.  The dns-320 shows up on the source list of the samsung tv but none of the contents show up.  I've got a bunch of mkv's, iso's, mp3's, and jpg's on it.

From what I have gathered so far from the lacking Samsung directions it's supposed to play all of that stuff from any dlna server.  D-link says the dns-320 has a dlna server.  I have the upnp av server on the dns-320 enabled for the entire volume.  What am I doing wrong/not doing?

could it be that you just started the upnp sever? When it has to search through the whole disk it may take a while until the da

It never worked.  I'm about out of space on the nas anyway and since it doesn't work for all the devices in my home I'm going to give up on nas instead of adding another.  Now I'm trying to copy the data of my dns-320 so I can put it on a raid 5 on my workstation which I'll just leave running now.  I've had problems copying large amounts of data off the dns-320 in the past so I'm not even going to try copying 2 tb off it over the network.

I'm trying to install one of the hard drives out of the dns320 into my workstation and directly copy the data off it.  EXT2IFS which the stick on this board says to use doesn't work because the dns-320 uses 256 inodes and ext2ifs only supports 128 inodes.  I've also tried booting into linux mint to read the drive but it only shows a 524 megabyte volume with an ftp folder and a file named change_Nas_Prog-attr.  I'm  not sure what I'm going to do next.  I've posted a thread here asking for help again but no responses yet.

DLNA certification is a funny thing in the sense that there is no guarantee that any 2 DLNA certified devices will ever interoperate. It's because the standard doesn't say a word about media formats. It is at the mercy of manufacturers.
From my experience Firefly UPnP server in our NAS-s is only willing to stream avi and mpg file formats. No subtitles.

Well...I'm dissapointed/annoyed with Samsung that my "smart" tv is too stupid to just browse for a network share to add to its own media catalog like my wdtv live hub does.

I'm a little dissapointed that the dns-320 upnp server doesn't work since I needed it to in order to work around the lacking of the smart tv.

And I'm dissapointed/annoyed that dlink doesn't make a simple utility or how to to get your data off a drive taken out of one of their NAS units.

This is really basic funtionality/support the manufacturer's shouldn't have overlooked to make their products genuinely useful and meet the needs of their customers.  I'm afraid the "digital home" as dlink likes to call it is really more like a cardboard box with holes and it's raining.

That's precisely why I've scrapped the DLNA (in addition to it's lousy user interface) and entered the world of AirPlay. It has it's own limitations (esp re media formats = MPEG4 & H.264/AVC & AAC/MP3/AC3 only), but these are no showstoppers and it just works. Also the media tools are readily available.

usfwalden, you do know that removing a disk from a NAS to try and extract data from it is a last ditch recovery measure - NOT something to do as a regular thing, hence no simple tool.

As for your DNLA problems, you are not the only person that DNLA certified products only work together if they are from the same manufacturer and are of the same age.

You could investigate Fun_plug and an alternative media streaming program (google is you friend here).

I don't see any reason taking a disk out of a nas should be considered a last ditch recovery measure.  When you have large amounts of data it only makes sense to move it over the fastest and most reliable interface possible.

I also think recovery should be made as easy as possible.  When people put their data in a raid they are usually doing it to keep it safe + they probably have a lot of data.  It's a given that someday they will need to get it off to put it on something else.  There's a lot less value to any storage solution that doesn't provide for that.

The dns-320 uses linux to make a software raid right?  How many different linux operating systems are out there with iso's ready to boot off a cd/dvd now?  Why can't dlink make a how to and if necessary a package to enable people to use any of those linux versions to mount a disk/the disks out of a NAS?  It just doesn't make any sense not to.  Making it hard for me to get my data back doesn't make me stick with a dlink product that isn't working for me anymore; it makes me not want to migrate to another dlnk product.

I got the NAS in the first place because I didn't want to leave my workstation on.  I was willing to incur the extra expense for that ability.  If the dnla server worked and there was an easy way to get my data off the disks  I would probably be buying a 4 disk nas from dlink now instead of migrating to my workstation.

I've the same problem with my Samsung SmartTV 6305 (I've an old DNS-323 and a DNS-320), but the dlna support works fine with my PS3.

I moved to a dell server with perc6i raid and installed the mezzmo media server on it.  The mezzmo media server is working perfrectly with my Samsung "smart" tv as well as my wdtv live hub and all the computers on my network.  It automatically detects what the device is that is accessing it, knows what encodings it supports and transcodes whatever you've got into whatever it needs to be fore the device viewing it.  It just seemlessly works.

With the real raid controller on the server I get online expansion and won't ever get my data stuck in some proprietary linux box with no documentation or tools to effectively get it off it.

Hey all,

I've been following a few forums on this topic and looking for suggestions for an IT novice.

I have a DNS323B running two 1TB drives. I've recently had it connected to my router and accessed via multiple wireless devices and media streamers without issue.

I've now purchased a Samsung SmartTV and have the DNS connected via ethernet using the router as a switch. The TV can 'see' the DNS-323 but indicates there are no files on it, when I know I have lots of folders and files.

The DNS box is in an enclosure in the garage and I don't want to have to have another device attached to it just to enable it to share. Can you suggest any actions I can take to get the TV 'seeing' my folders and files?

Would appreciate any help.
Cheers

Hi,
I had the same problems with my NAS and Samsung TV. The only way I found was installing a Twonky DLNA Serever on NAS. Now I can stream all my videos directly to the TV
If you are interested you can find instructions how to install Twonky on this link: http://nas-tweaks.net/384/installation-of-twonky-server-7-on-nas-devices/
