Issues with Wireless Connectivity of Devices
« on: December 11, 2012, 09:20:14 PM »

So I have an odd issue here with my wireless setup. Hopefully someone can help. I have my router (dir-655) set up as follows: wpa2, AES only, mixed g/n, channel 9, firmware 2.07NA. All wireless devices are approximately 15 feet from the router with clear lines of sight.

My issues are two fold. First, my Roku and iPhone 5 no longer communicate with each other. Through the Roku app I could control my Roku using the iphone on my old Lynksys router (b/g only). Now that I have set up this router and am broadcasting on g/n the two can no longer see each other. From the router I can see and ping both devices. However, the Roku is on the n-mode while the iphone sticks on the g-mode.

When I switched so that the router only operates in n-mode the iphone still shows up as operating in g-mode and the devices cannot see each other. When I switch to g-mode only both devices register as connected in that mode but they still cannot see each other. Again, I can see them both from the router and can ping both devices.

??? Any ideas?

The second problem is tangential. When pinging my roku the trip times average 2 ms. When pinging my iphone the travel times average 300 ms. Does this matter?

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

What region are you located?

Has a Factory Reset been performed before and after the FW update?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
Are speeds faster if you try to connect closer to the router? Turn off all devices then connect ONE device at a time and check the connection speed for each device.
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.

Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Hey. Thanks for all of the helpful hints and tips. It works !!

I made sure to try all of the steps one by one so that I could see which step, if any, would cure the problem. It appears that turning off  WLAN Partition was the critical step. After I unchecked this option I once again able to get my Roku and iphone communicating.

My iphone 5 still refuses to connect via the n-band. However my ipod 4 will?? Obviously this is an iphone issue though. Anyone heard of this before?

Thanks again!

Glad you got it working.

What happens if you set for Single mode N? Will the iPhone 5 connect?
Also set for Auto-20/40Mhz and test 20Mhz only.

If the Roku connects at N modes and the iPhone won't, I presume the iPhone as the problem.
