Disk full problem
« on: December 12, 2012, 03:13:49 AM »

Hello,

In my little company we're using a DNS-325 from some months ago without problems. But since a few weeks I notice the disk are going to be full. The web interface shows that the storage capacity is near to 80%. We are using two 1Gb hdd in Raid 1 mode. So according the web interface we have a amount of data in the NAS near to 800Gb.

The problem is that when I select all files and folders in the network shared folder "volume_1" there are only 235Gb of data. Then, Where are the amount of data from the 235Gb to the 800Gb?

First, I thought that all this hidden data were in the recycle bin, but in all the network shares the recycle bin option is disabled, and with the "D-Link storage utility" I don't find any recycle bin.

Second, I check there are any file or folder hidden in the windows properties for the "volume_1" folder. But there aren't any hidden data.

What is happening?

Thanks for your help.

Please open the DNS-325 web UI and navigate to Management > System Status > System Info > Volume Information and post the HDD status information.

This is the information:

Volume Information
Volume Name                   Volume_1
Volume Type                   RAID 1
Sync Time Remaining           Completed
Total Hard Drive Capacity   981351 MB
Used Space                           771924 MB
Unused Space                   209427 MB

The Volume_1 has four folders only. When I select this four folders it size is 235Gb only.

On its face, the configuration looks correct. I presume you checked for hidden filed and folders in Windows through Control Panels > Folder Options > View and select "Show hidden files, folders, and drives"?

Although the storage capacity appears to be almost full now, are you 100% sure that the available storage read correctly in the past or is it possible you just didn't notice this inconsistency until now?

I notice this problem since summer, then I comment to my coworkers to be carefull with the data they storage in the NAS becouse it was almost full.

Time after I began to investigate who was filling the NAS and then I detect the problem.

First I think the posibility of hidden files but there aren't any file hidden.
Second, I think that there was any recycle bin active and all this amount of data was in the recycle bin but I didn't find any recycle bin.

Today I try to enable the recycle bin option for a network shared folder called "S4e" but I don't find the recycle bin with the "D-Link Storage Utility" to map this bin in may PC. Before to use the D-Link Storage utility I've restarted the NAS but I can't find the recycle bin. I try to map the bin using windows directly mapping the drive "\\nas\Recycle Bin - S4e" but nothing. I don't understand why the D-Link Storage Utility doesn't find this recycle bin, when I have mapped the Volume_1 recycle bin without problem.

Perhaps, all the data that I can't see is in a recycle bin that I can't see. What do you think?

Here's a test to determine if the recycle bin is active:

  • Take note of the used/unused space on Volume_1
  • Add a file to Volume_1 and take note of the used/unused space
  • Delete the newly added file from Volume_1 and take note of the used/unused space

If the recycle bin is active, you should see a pattern similar to the following:

  • Free: 500 GB Used: 400 GB
  • Add 10 GB File;  Free: 490 GB Used: 410 GB
  • Delete 10 GB File;  Free: 490 GB Used: 400 GB
  • Add 15 GB File;  Free: 475 GB Used: 385 GB
  • Delete 15 GB File;  Free: 475 GB Used: 400 GB
  • The usable space diminishes with time (as files are added/deleted)

These are the test results:

... 1. Take note of the used/unused space on Volume_1 ...

Used Space         779303 MB
Unused Space   202048 MB
These values are taken from the web UI on Managment\Systems Status\System Info\Volume Information

... 2. Add a file to Volume_1 and take note of the used/unused space ...

I copy in a volume_1 sub-folder a file with size 3,91 GB (4.206 MB). Then the result is:

Used Space   783518 MB
Unused Space   197833 MB
Is correct.

...3. Delete the newly added file from Volume_1 and take note of the used/unused space ...

This is the result:
Used Space   779312 MB
Unused Space   202039 MB

So, it seems that there isn't a recycle bin. There is a little difference from the point 1 to the point 3 perhaps there is someone working in the NAS too.

just jumping into the conversation here ...

I assume you're running windows?  have you checked to see if "system restore" is enabled on your NAS through windows?  this is a space killer.

Wellcome to my problem njchan,

You have a good idea, but I think isn't the problem. I check in my pc (with windows) and I only has active the recovery system in the C:\ unit.

I think if this option was active I would see any kind of heavy file in the NAS.

Today I've done a new test.

I connect to NAS with a Ubuntu PC. I thought with Ubuntu I could see some kind of file that Windows didn't show me, like windows system file. But I don't find anything strange.

I select all folders and files and I see its properties and the data size is 262 Gb when windows detect 244Gb. More or less is the same size that Windows show me.

So I don't know why the NAS says that the capacity is arround the 80% (800Gb). Where is the 550Gb of capacity losed?

Hello again,

I find the problem but I don't know how to solve.

All data is in the recycle bin. As I say in previous post this NAS is installed in a little company, and there are 20 people that can access to the NAS.
I discover that any user has a recycle bin, and every time I looked to the recycle bin I was looking to my personal recycle bin. So I was looking the recycle bin empty but really it was fully of other users data that I can't see.

My questions are:
How can I access to the reycle bin of another user?
It's possible to access to the NAS through the LAN as administrator user to access all the personal recycles bins?
It's possible to disable the recycle bin? All shares has the recycle bin option disabled.

I have found a few options, and none of them is pleasant:
- disable the Recycle bin option for the volume: Account Management --> Modify
- use one account for all users
- install fun_plug, and login with ssh to clean the recycle folder as root (at least on DNS-320 the fun_plug brings quite noticeable performance hit)

None of them are perfect. I also want to know how to delete other-users Recycle Bins?
The admin should have this right from the web interface.
