DIR-655 DNS Issues?!
« on: December 25, 2012, 01:11:12 PM »

Hey all, I've had the DIR-655 for a few months now, along with a Motorola Surfboard sb6121 DOCSIS 3.0

Modem works fine, the router was working perfectly fine until recently last week.

I have a desktop hardwired and a wireless network going on that I use just for my mobile phone and tablet at times. At first I was having disconnection problems with my wireless, then noticed a neighbor installed a similar router in the area according to my wifi analyzer, so I changed the channels and my wireless started working great. During this process I also did a firmware update and since then I've been receiving some really poor browsing problems, sometimes I'll visit websites like Facebook, or a news website, and it'll say something about the DNS not working, (at this point I'll ping the website and it still pings fine without any loss) so I'll visit the website about 10 minutes later and it works great. I've done extensive research on forums/Google and found it must link up to the new firmware update and something about a DNS relay? My version is:

Hardware Version: B1     Firmware Version: 2.10NA

In other words, is there a way I can fix this issue from disconnecting without having to downgrade back to the old firmware? Or is this a common issue that'll continue to happen? If I do downgrade, HOW do I downgrade back to the stable version? Thanks all.

Link>Welcome!

What region are you located?
Has a Factory Reset been performed both before and after doing the FW update??
Was there a reason for the upgrade?

What ISP Service do you have?

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Thanks for the reply. I only updated the firmware because it stated there was an update in the control panel as mine was a over a year old. I live in North America, and have Charter ISP. My ISP is fine because if I connect directly to my modem I have no issues; only with the router I experience DNS issues.

I also updated the firmware because at first I was having disconnection issues with my modem non stop, but later found out it was the wireless channel I was on, it was set for AUTO, so I chose a different channel and since then it's been stable, but since I already updated the firmware I've been receiving DNS issues when visiting websites such as Facebook; also certain images will not display correctly on some websites, which is very annoying.

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N?

Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

I've performed all the required steps you've asked so far. No wireless devices in area. As the problem is intermittent and I've seen there are multiple problems with this version of the DIR-655 and the firmware upgrade having DNS issues, I will have to sit and hope it does not occur anymore after I've attempted the steps in your first reply.

Furry, thanks for the reply again. The problem happened again but this time I couldn't access the forums since my last reply, it kept saying the same with Google Chrome:

This webpage is not available
The server at forums.dlink.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed. DNS is the network service that translates a website's name to its Internet address. This error is most often caused by having no connection to the Internet or a misconfigured network. It can also be caused by an unresponsive DNS server or a firewall preventing Google Chrome from accessing the network.

(I've also tried FireFox, and Internet Explorer) - I reloaded the website just now and it worked fine, so it seems to happen on and off. I did not perform a factory reset before or after, is that needed?

On my Facebook feed there are a lot of missing images/thumbnails of photos, and other websites there are missing images on certain parts too, which can be very annoying. It seems this is happening a lot lately this week, since the firmware update at least.

Lets perform a Factory Reset on the router and then set up the router from scratch using some of the options I suggested for the wired and wireless devices.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Furry, I am well aware of Teamviewer and wouldn't mind you assisting me through the procedures, as you are a D-Link Moderator; can I PM you the information to connect?

Find it odd that the UI factory reset doesn't clear the PW. So we had to use the back button. Downgraded to v2.07NA and helped him set up the router from scratch. FB and other sights are working well. Speedtest and ISP speeds are to spec and working well.

Keep us posted if any other problems arise.

Enjoy.  ;)

Seems like I'm getting more problems lately, even though I've not had one disconnect problem since my router settings were rolled back to the old firmware, it seems my wireless is ALWAYS disconnecting. I have multiple disconnects on random, no matter how close I am. I've tried on my PS3, 2 tablets, and even Android phone, it always disconnects, although the wired PC will never lose Internet connection. I've tried multiple solutions with different channels, and even the settings Furry suggested like disabling Short GI and other advanced options. The only thing I can narrow this down to and what I found on other posts was the date/time settings in the router, it some how keeps losing time by the hours, and someone said it syncs with the wireless causing it to "expire," which the date on the router itself is off by a few days, causing it to kick the wireless off the network; how do you fix the date/time to actually sync properly? I've tried the .gov time zones and even using the sync on the computer, still keeps changing it by the hour every other hour.

I just purchased the DIR-655 and I'm having the same DNS issues the rest of the world is having.  I thought I did my research on this router before purchasing, but obviously it was a huge mistake buying it.  I have to reboot it almost EVERY DAY to get it to work.  It continually drops the connection/and/or cannot find domains: ie: google.com.
I have the latest FW:  2.10NA.

When will this be fixed?
