DIR-655 wifi "link speed" fluctuates on all devices
« on: January 09, 2013, 08:26:17 AM »

Hello,  I have a DIR-655 that I have been using for a while (b1 revision).  and suddenly I noticed my wifi speed fluctuates constantly.  My lenovo Y580 sees speed drop to 130 immediately and then it can slowly progress to 1 Mbps until the hardware is all rebooted.  Same happens to my Nexus 7, Dell XPS M1530 and to my roku.  Please assist, I have updated to 2.07 (since 2.10 is advised to avoid). And I have attempted changing channels or factory refresh.

What Firmware version is currently loaded? 2.07
What region are you located? NA

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL? Cable (link speed independent of internet speed)
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router? Seporate motorla ((link speed independent of modem)
What ISP Modem make and model do you have? Does not matter, router issue
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.  Not bridged

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.  Tried
Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel. Tried
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.  Tried
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Tried
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking.  Old network used 1/2 reserved half dynamic
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address. yes
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall. Tried
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.  Tried

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.  G/N
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?  G/N is required
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only. Tried both
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.  WPA2/AES forced
What wireless devices do you have connected? 2 laptops 1 G, 1 N, roku first gen and nexus 7
Any cordless house phones? Unsure if neighbors have one
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.  Attempted channel switching
Turn off Short GI and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless. Tried

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.  Independent of issue, not a factor
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.  Wired works perfect

Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Cat6 is recommended.  Wireless issue.

Any cordless house phones? Unsure if neighbors have one. As a test, can you take the 655 to a different location, say a friend or families place and test? You wouldn't even need to connect it to internet, just to see if the problem follows in a different location.
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer to find out.  Attempted channel switching How many other WiFi routers are near by?

Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.  Wired works perfect If you disable and turn off ALL wireless devices accept for one, do you still see this happending? Then test a different device, testing each one as you go. Then graduating turning on all the devices?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Also, was a factory reset performed both before and after the 2.07 FW file was sent and configured from scratch?

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking.  Old network used 1/2 reserved half dynamic Please test with reservations on ALL devices ON the router.

Should the dynamic reservations affect the link speed for the device?  This type of test would appear to only be for issues regarding internet connectivity by devices conflicting on the Wireless LAN

Not sure if I can test it out in a timely matter, however the router is 5-10 feet direct from the wireless devices in question

Quite a few, about 10 to 15 networks can be found nearby.  However was working well until recently

Tried this, immediate fluctuations

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

That would work

Only after the upgrade to 2.07, did a router reset and attempt at reconfigure before hand.  Should I try 2.10?

Any thing is possible. Reason for testing this out is to help narrow down any isolate any automatic bahavior on the router and keep everything to a reserved IP address so you know what each device is getting each and every time the device is powered up.

Having that many network near by and mostly being on 2.4Ghz could and probably is the root cause of the issue. Yes it's possible the router has been working well up to a certain point, however, if maybe one or 2 other WiFi routers moved in to the neighborhood recently, this could have been the tipping point and the straw that broke the routers back as the area was probably at the upper limits with other Wifi routers competing for open channels. There are only 11 channels so haveing 15 or more is going to present some radio conditions. Having more Wifi router come into play has probably caused the area to become more congested. You can try to lower the power out put of the router under Advanced/Adv Wireless from HIGH to Medium or LOW. Since you are operating in a 10ft distance to the router, maybe the power adjustment might help.

Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.  Wired works perfect If you disable and turn off ALL wireless devices accept for one, do you still see this happening? Then test a different device, testing each one as you go. Then graduating turning on all the devices?

At this point I don't think v2.10 will do or make any differences. I fell that your area is getting WiFi congested with other 2.4Ghz routers all trying to find and open and clear channel. Even though it has been working, something externally has moved in to the are and seems to be effecting the router.

Only other think you might check to see and test is the Power Adapter of the 655. If you can get someone to measure the DC volts on the tip, should be 12v 2A. Possible the adatper could be going bad however if they do, they usually just completely fail and wont power up anything.

I recommend reading the following <Bridge Mode vs Relay vs Acess Point (AP) / Routers vs Dedicated Access Points (AP)> and consider possibly testing a 5Ghz DLink DAP model AP in your area. The sticky gives some information on a couple of upgrade possibilities for PCs, Laptops and some devices that have a LAN port or a USB port that can be used in converting over to a 5Ghz WiFi platform. Since the area seems to be congested on the 2.4Ghz frequency, maybe 5Ghz is a better option for you. You could still use the 655 as your main host router, maybe even use it's WiFi in a limited capacity for some mobile items, however on the other hand you might want to just disable the WiFi on the 655 and go 5Ghz only as an option.

I can take a look at your router settings with you if you want me to. Send me a PM with teamviwer ID and password and we can have a go at it.

I think Red on Black is a bit harder to read than Green on Black. My 2 cents.  ::)

If your devices are close to the router, you may want to try reducing the transmit power level.  On the A hardware the setting is under  Advanced> Advanced Wireless.
