Not all devices connect to the internet
« on: February 03, 2013, 09:48:31 AM »

I have just switched to a new internet provider (UnityMedia in Germany) and they provided me with a CISCO cable modem (EPC3208G) and a 'wireless N 150 Home Router DIR-600' (hardware Bx and firmware 2.13).
I had to ring the service desk to complete set up. I was told to connect the LAN cable (from the modem) into LAN number 1 rather than 'internet' (in the router). I was also told to change the router IP address to 192.168.0.2. Thereafter the connection to the internet was established (they also asked me to make some other changes which I can no longer recall).
However after the phone call with the D-link service desk I attempted to connect my other internet enabled devices (kindle, internet radio and smartphone) and apart from one other laptop nothing can connect to the internet.
Any suggestions why two laptops in the house can connect to the internet yet nothing else can?

Thanks.

Link>Welcome!

If this ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.

You need to connect the LAN cable between the ISP modem to the WAN or Internet port on the DIR-600. Not the LAN port. Then connect everything to the LAN Ports as needed.

Thanks for the response.

It seems that the modem is bridged.

Under: Status/Device Info/Wan IP address : 0.0.0.0

However, after reconnecting the LAN cable according to your instructions (and counter to the instructions previously received from Slink service desk Germany) I see that the modem is no longer bridged and I no longer have any access to the internet. Whilst in this setup I can not access the modem.
Switching the cables back I can again access the modem and see that it does have a DMZ option (applications and gaming/DMZ/DMZ host IP address).
I attempted to bridge the modem (in the routher and in the ISP modem) but I don't think I was successful. ie I could not connect to the internet from any devices when the cable was set up as you suggested.

Can you tell me exactly which IP address I should enter where?

Thanks.

If the modem can be bridged then you just need to connect the LAN coble from the modem to the WAN port on the 600. In this configuration the 600 router should get a public IP address from the ISP modem and not a 192.168.0. something address.

Now if the modem is not bridge, just keep the LAN cable coming from the ISP modem to the 600 routers WAN port. Connect up one PC to the LAN port on the 600 and bring it all online. Look at the Status/Device Info page on the 600 and the WAN IP address should show a IP address of maybe 192.168.0.something or maybe a 10.0.something address. If you see an IP address on the 600 here, then input this same address on the ISP Modems DMZ. You should see if you can reserve this IP address on the ISP modem as well.

Thanks for your reply.

I reset the the ISP modem and the 600 router. Set up the cables as you explained and ran into my first problem. I can't access the ISP modem in this configuration. ie ISP modem connected to WAN port of 600 and LAN port of 600 connected to my PC. I can connect to the router but no not the modem nor the internet.

So I tried a work around, I looked up the WAN IP address on the 600 (192.168.0.12) and then connected my computer directly to the ISP modem with the cable. Then I entered 192.168.0.12 into the ' DMZ host IP address' field of the ISP modem. Saved the changes.

Then I set the cables up in the configuration you recommended and nothing had changed. Still no internet and no access to the ISP modem.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Did you input the PPPoE account information on the 600 while the ISP modem was bridged? After all that is done, you need to power OFF the ISP modem and 600 router. Then power ON the ISP modem and let it sync, then power up the 600 and let it connect. You can check the status on the 600 router using the Status/Device Info/Wan section to see if it acquired a public IP address and not the 192.168.0.something address.
